96 E-350 7.5l. Fuel pump went out. It is a single tank van, I think the big 35 gallon one. The parts stores list like 5 different pumps, which damn one do I need? I want to do the job all at once, not in two parts having to take out the old one to see which one I need. Anyone know? Easy job, but not one I want to break into equal halves.

 

Buy all three and return the other two.

Don't forget the inline filter on the frame. Usually they are the cause of the pump failure. They are supposed to be replaced every 50,000 miles, but almost nobody does.

 

I replaced that in March when I did all the engine work. It is a Ford so I'm not surprised. Had a POS 01 Taurus that I had to replace the pump three times on. I'm assuming this will be an easier job that the Taurus, which was easy anyway. I don't want to buy all three so unless someone knows the van/tank combo specifically, it looks like I'm destined to do the job in two courses rather than a single meal.

 

How can a filter that is downstream of a pump cause pump failure?

 

If you put your VIN# in the Online Ford parts, It might tell you which pump you have.. Works for a lot of other parts..

Ain't buying that. The filter would have to be plugged to the extent the car wouldn't hardly run. I think pumps wear out. Bad gas (ethanol) is a more likely problem.

That's likely cause #1. #2 is bad gas. And the 24th likely reason is a bad filter (#52 in your case because you changed it regularly).

There is truth in what he said. The plugged filter puts excessive pressure on the vanes of the pump (in order to overcome the additional back pressure of plugged filter). It doesn't burn up the pump motor...more likely wears the vanes of the pump (in the case of a rotary style). When I turned wrenches for a living, it was common to replace a plugged filter only to have a pump fail a short time later. It's important to change the filter BEFORE it's plugged for this reason.

But, the fact is, the pump failed because it was old, not maybe because the filter was plugged. This case,...it is closed.

 

It was old, and who know what prior maintenance it had. Nonetheless, it is a theoretical discussion since regardless, FF has to hang up his lazy coat and do some damn work again. Just spent too much time getting the HEMI back on the road.

 

So, are you seconding the closing of the case?
