I'm going to have the GT's tank cleaned, but i'm missing the little metal valve that goes on the top of the tank (with a hose that leads to the charcoal canister) I can't seem to find one online. Any idea where I could find one? I also need to know if the locking ring for that and the sending unit are the same.
you mean this....?? maybe the original was metal, this replacement is plastic. https://www.dearbornclassics.com/fuel-tank-vent-valve-ranchero-torino-1972-1979.html
I haven't found a replacement for the one's that were on '72/'73 22 gallon tanks - the one in the post above fits the '74-'79 replacement tanks and provides the benefit of having the roll over valve which was absent on the original equipment units. What year is your car again?
Food for thought - not saying you should or shouldn't go this route - just info you might be able to use. The currently available 1974 - 1979 replacement fuel tanks are 26 gallon, not the 22 gallon of our '72s. They install the same way in the same place and appear the same as the '72 tank. The straps bend at slightly different location but will reach. The additional 4 gallons of fuel for me was welcome with my 429 Ranchero only getting 9 MPG most of the time the added fuel helped my range quite a bit. Gasoline weighs about 6 pounds per gallon, so adding 4 gallons of fuel will only have an impact of about 24 pounds - you won't notice it. To convert to a 1974 - 1979 tank you need the tank, a new sending unit with o-ring seal and locking ring, the rollover valve/vent and the o-ring that it seats in and seals, the filler neck rubber o-ring seal, and you might choose to replace the overflow hose adjacent to the filler neck I also replaced the carriage bolts with same diameter and slightly longer bolts in stainless steel (Lowes) and Nyloc Nuts. Changeover took about two hours taking it easy and sipping on my coffee when the mood struck. Parts available here and other fine vendors: https://www.dearbornclassics.com/fuel-tank-26-gallon-ranchero-1974-1979.html https://www.dearbornclassics.com/fuel-sending-unit-ranchero-and-torino-1974-1979.html https://www.dearbornclassics.com/fuel-sending-unit-locking-ring-ford-and-mercury-1960-1979.html https://www.dearbornclassics.com/fuel-sender-ring-gasket-ford-and-mercury-1960-1979.html https://www.dearbornclassics.com/vent-valve-seal-fuel-tank-rubber-torino-ranchero-1972-1979.html (this link has a link at the bottom that allows you to buy the vent valve, vent valve seal, and filler pipe seal in one click). https://www.dearbornclassics.com/72-79-ranchero-torino-fuel-filler-seal.html https://www.dearbornclassics.com/fuel-tank-vent-valve-ranchero-torino-1972-1979.html Other vendors such as Rock Auto and MACS have these same parts.
Just an aside, I do have a used and probably broken '72 vent - it doesn't attach with a ring or any form of separate fastener or system, it had a couple of snap type clips integral with the pot metal casting. You might be able to fix it in place with some JB Weld. Edited to add, the newer plastic vent line seems like it is a little smaller than the original size on the '72 tank - I made a nipple that converted 1/4" line from the vent valve to the 5/16" fuel vapor line at the frame.
