I don't particularly like the stock steering wheel in my newly acquired 1968 Ranchero and was wondering what earlier Ford steering wheel would work and look good?? Thanks for any suggestions...
The leather Ford Sport Wheel looks good. Has anyone used a steering wheel from - CON2R? some of their wheels look pretty good - but expensive... https://con2r.com/
Those are really cool. And at $350 up, they better be. For fun I designed a wheel that I thought I'd like, and then saw the price, $545, and didn't like it anymore.
Resembles a Granada and/or Fairmont Wheel circa 1979 - 1984. What is your plan to make the horn functional?
Turn signal lever - push it in toward the column. Thinking about it, depending on the number of wire leads and the pinouts one might just be able to adapt a Fairmont turn signal switch (with the horn on T/S lever) to an earlier generation of Ranchero. Hmmmm... yellow and dark blue blue wires operate the horn so...
So... He would have to be pretty passionate about that wheel... But it's a make it your own world, anything is possible.
I like the wheel and it was Ford.. I didn't realize about the horn until I received the wheel.. It looks great in my Ranchero's red interior.. I will just use a button under the dash to activate the horn.. Yes, 1978 Fairmont wheel.. You guys are not just good, you're fast too.. I like it better than run of the mill after market wheels.. It looks like it belongs there....
Nice looking wheel and your solution for the horn will be at least as reliable as most of the aftermarket wheels that are out there. Good find!
I just realized that the Fairmont steering wheel I put on my car was also on the Fairmont "Durango/Ranchero" so I guess I'm still using a proper Ford Ranchero(?) wheel...
Ha, that wheel is for the Fox cars without power steering. How do I know? My first car was Dad's '78 Fairmont, and the only two goodies he got were the 200 CID engine and backlight heater. Even the raidio was AM-only. But I have a funny story.... One time, my big brother Fred had to go get something somewhere, and he needed my help, so we're driving along, and some moron cuts us off. So Fred goes and hits the center button, breaking the lens! A week later, I'm with Dad, and as we get in the car, he sees the broken center, and demands, "Who broke my f&%king button?!?" I told him it was Fred, who didn't know the horn was part of the turn signal stock. Years later, I get the car, and at the junkyard, I find a center in perfect condition, so I replaced the broken one.
Ummm, wheel was the same, power or manual steering. When I got married I special ordered a 1979 Fairmont Futura for Smaug (bride) (Smaug being a term of endearment - the golden dragon that guards the pile of treasure) - 4 cylinder, automatic, air, AM/FM, power steering & brakes. Never had a problem with it that wasn't self inflicted or run it into the ground normal wear and tear related. It was perfect for us and a very good car considering the time, the time being everything rusted out quickly - it got left behind in Hawaii 8 years and 175,000 miles later (lots of long drives around to Pearl Harbor from where we lived in Ewa Beach. There are I times I still wish we had that car. The style at the time fit my (our) eye, easy to work on, reasonable ride and for a full up smogger semi-sporty (if you can say "smogger" and sporty in the same sentence... The wheel is the same for any fit of steering on those.
If you find one today in the boneyard it will probably be on a 78-86 Bronco, Mustang II wheel looks the same but no horn provision. in the past you could find them on Torinos, Rancheros, Granadas , Cougars without cruise
I had a Fairmont with the police package and it was a 4 cylinder 4 speed stick shift. The door had a decal that was painted over. I cleaned off the paint and the decal said US Department on the Interior. I found some papers from Hoover Dam so it must have been from Nevada. Strange car for sure. The only things I found on that car that was different from a regular fairmont was a power steering cooler, high amp alternator, large f+r sway bar and the 115 mph speedo.
