Put in the new clutch and bell.
Could NOT get the trans to go in!
Got suspicious of the plastic pilot tool, as compared to the trans input shaft. Both were 1 1/16 wide, 10 tooth.
BUT, the splines on the plastic tool (and the disc when I took it out!), were symmetrical in peaks and valleys, while the trans input has wider peaks and narrower valleys!

WRONG DISC! See the pics. Note the plastic pilot versus the trans input.

Anyone know why my clutch kit, which purports to be correct for a '64 Ranchero with 260 and T10 trans, doesn't fit??
Maybe the disc (10") for a six??

See the pics if clear enough.

I imagine you tried the disc on the shaft after you pulled the trans ? Kinda unusual for a coarse spline disc to not fit. Check the diameter of the shaft, then the disc, plus the measured width of the splines. It's not uncommon to have to fight with them getting them to mate up, not much room for error.

No chance to fit! Would'nt go on the trans with a sledge hammer!

Maybe later year T-10 or top loader? Any casting/tag numbers on tranny to ID?

Not a top loader. Early T10 with narrow bell bolt pattern, wide ratio with 2.73 first gear on a 5 bolt bell. Gone on '65 model year. DST

Got another 10" disc coming. Pick looks right, with wider peaks and narrower valley grooves. Will post if it slides on the trans OR NOT!

That's why I always check the disc against the input shaft before an install; you just never know what you'll run into.

Why do you think I now do that? And it was a super T-10, aluminum case, my @$$! We strained our milk attempting to get it to go on, then my boss tells me to pull it apart, see if the disc goes on the shaft. Then he said, "You should've done that before." So, we've all been there.

Disc came today! Fits perfectly! AUTOZONE #D4184. Will post a pic when I shrink its size at home. Too big to post.

Don't feel too bad about getting had by that zinger. I think nearly all of us here learned that "Trust but Verify" lesson the hard way. Hope the rest of the job goes easy.

Finally got more than single digit weather! No heat in my garage. Had a heat wave today: 30F.

Got my clutch, P/P, bell, and trans installed!

Took some wiggling but went right in.

    So relieved!

Good to read it is back together. Hate it when the gozinta doesn't fit the first time.

I'm a cheap bastard. That way, I don't have to overthink it.
