afternoon all, just watching the news and seen that California is going to have some mandatory blackouts?any one of our members going to be affected?do they give you time to empty the fridge?can you go to work? Seems extreme but just coming back from vacation there I know it’s very dry, what is the reasoning?be safe
Northern Ca, patrons of PG&E, results from the Camp fire "Paradise" .could be up to 2 weeks, ck with your utilities companies.
I'm in SoCal, and we get our electricity from Edison, so we shouldn't see any impact. But I have ice cream in the freezer, so I'd better eat it all tonight, just in case … Like 66G said, it's because of the Paradise fires last year. PG&E got dinged heavy last year, when it was discovered that they didn't maintain the trees around their equipment, which caused multiple fires. Moral of the story: trim your trees. Joseph
Still have the lights on here in the Bay Area, although the Foothills are going to lose power tomorrow night , PGE is cutting them off to prevent fires.
Talked to my brother who lives up there and it was more than the close to 100 mph winds slapping the wires together and the sparks hitting the dry brush than the trees in the wires, or the combination of both.
Being in the high desert, there's not much to burn down here, but we're getting ~50MPH gusts around here this afternoon. One of the curses of living in this area. Joseph
besides the obvious that pg&e doesn't cover about 80% of that maybe gavin worthless could go crying to aunt Nancy for help
Ten minutes to midnight here, and the power is still on, and no wind is visible at all. But we did gas both cars and charge phones and laptops, etc. Climate change is a bitch.
Cost of housing is low, relative to the rest of the state (4bd/2ba for $250K, easily). We're in the middle of a wheel, as far as access to different activities. Los Angeles is 2-1/2 hours to the south, Bakersfield 2 hours west, Mammoth is 3 hours north, Lake Isabella is 1-1/2 hours west (man-made reservoir, boating allowed). We're a community of 30K, +/-. We don't have a LOT of resources locally, but we're bigger than a one-dog town. It's a very conservative community, in a fairly conservative county, in a very liberal state, which makes us a political bubble. Lots of churches, several bars, no adult shops, one medical marijuana dispensary. Probably a dozen traffic lights (when I moved out in '85, we had one). The China Lake Naval Base is the big employer, so we feel the ebbs and flows of the military budget. Temps get to 120*F in the summer, down to 15*F in the winter, but with relatively low humidity. Very windy in the spring. We live on rumors (Arnold Schwarzenegger just bought a house, we're getting an Indian casino, they're going to close the naval facilities in Corona and move the jobs up here, we're getting a Marie Callender's, etc), none of which come true. A lot of young people say there's nothing to do, then go off to college, then come back to make it their home again. And it's home to the most rad '64 Ranchero in the state, of course! Joseph
Sounds like central Virginia. Except for the conservative part. And we have no pot stores. UVa is our big employer. The Rock, John Grisham, Morgan Freeman all live here, in the summer. I've seen all three out and about (small town and all). 2+ hours to ocean, or swamp (DC), or middle of WV mountains. It gets hot as balls in the summer, but our hot has tons of humidity with it. Same with the kids (not the humidity part). Nothing to do here!! We want the big city. Then they come back. My daughter left when she started college, finished, got a job teaching, and now, 8 years later, her and her husband are looking for houses here, which totally thrills the wife to death.
My son was looking for a job in Portland. I found a listing, and told him about it … which he ignored. I think the small-down vibe has him in its clutches (he's 25, so he'll probably be here forever). Big change, going from a population of 30K to 1M-ish, and all of them with an anti-California attitude. Joseph
Having power blackouts for reasons explained seem reasonable. Not knowing when or how long seem unreasonable? Back-up genny in ready mode.........
