Here's my 66. I traded a VW engine for. It's a 289 car that someone put a I6 in. My goal is to make it a diver by summer and one day get a V8 back in there.
Coolness. You know, those I-6 engines with the 7 main bearings are fairly suitable for modding; if you could score a 250 CID block and a suitable Aussie head with separate intake, you could end up with a fast and unusual rig there.
It wouldn't be cheaper, and it definitely wouldn't be easy... but 400HP and 800ft-lbs of torque would make it a tire smoker! 6.7 Diesel... would make one heck of an unusual Ranchero! Just kidding!
I think a bored (and perhaps a slightly stroked?) 250 would be able to produce a very strong and fairly powerful engine. Pair it with EFI, and it'll have a decent street manner.
I thought that was what the 300 6 was. Short of swapping to heads that put the intake on the other side, there really isn't much you can do with those things that is worth the effort performance wise.
No, the 240 is the same as a 300, the 250 was the largest displacement of the small OHV I-6. And yeah, there wasn't much redevelopment to make more usable heads for them.
Most of my brakes came in today!!!! I ordered stock drum parts for the rear and this disk kit for the front https://www.ebay.com/i/181640723606?chn=ps I just opened the boxes for now and WOW!!! Someone can weld! The brackets look amazing! The master cylinder and proportioning valve should be here Friday and I have next week off from work!
Whatchumean there isn't much out there for inline 6 engines ? ( http://www.fordsix.com ) ( http://www.stoveboltengineco.com ) ( http://www.cliffordperformance.net ) You can build a healthy 6 that is more than capable of getting you in trouble. Cousin next door has a inline 6 cylinder Jeep loaded for bear with an intercooled turbo with methanol injection that can make you a believer in tiny torque monsters. Everything on it is from Gail Banks Engineering.
No, I know about the aftermarket; what I meant was that Ford powertrain engineers didn't do anything to improve on what were essentially 1950's designs. Imagine if they made a separate EFI intake and head, similar to what they did on the 300? And did it in '79?
That would have been real nice of Ford but they basically abandoned the little workhorses, didn't they Andy ? I think the overall length of the inline 6 killed it. Vehicles were shrinking and compact V-6 engines were easier to fit in those confined new engine bays.
Although, I did see an article years ago where a Maverick with a 200 and a few go-fast goodies was set up with TBI, and it made more torque just off the basic tune, then they added nitrous which really got the old girl going.
