You can put the factory Police 140 MPH speedometer from any '77-79 intermediate Ford. They didn't make a GT cluster speedometer in anything other than the "sporty 85 MPH" unit. The police unit will fit and attach as the original with the exception that the trip odometer reset button will be over the odometer. Check out post #4 in the gauge clusters and wiring thread here:

    http://www.ranchero.us/forum/index.php?threads/72-79-gauge-clusters-and-wiring.5005/

The 74-76 120 MPH GT Speedometer will work but the gauge face style is different.

I don't have any spares on hand. Perhaps Green Sales if they are still around.

Canada was in mph first but began implementing metrication in 1970,by september 1977 all signs were changed over to kmh

It would be unusual for it to be original to the car. The 74 - 76 cluster with slight adjustments to either the 14 pin connector or a swap of the printed circuit could be made to work with the 77-79 cars. I would offer the opinion that a prior owner was not entirely enchanted with the 85 MPH speedometer or had an issue with the original cluster and made the change. A fairly complete discussion of the clusters available across the mid-size-full framed cars is here:

well, after checking the link it turns out the printed circuit is the 74-76.
    thanks for the link.
well, after checking the discussion it turns out the printed circuit is the 74-76,all the gauges but the clock worked in the 78 when i got the car and test drove it.again, that's why i thought they were stock 78.i can't check anymore what the previous did to the connector since i didn't take the harness out and the car is long gone.

If you look on the back of the cluster, the printed circuit will have a number on it starting with D4, D5 or D6 - that will indicate the group from which the cluster originated.
