Dyno, a buddy and I were in a restaurant in Ohio near the Eldora dirt track, looking out at the parking lot. Finally figured out that the odd thing we were seeing was no older vehicles. A waitress we were chatting with explained that due to how much salt was used there, you would not find a daily driver over three years old. I later learned that it was common for folks to buy two identical rides if they really liked a particular car or truck. One only for summer and the other that caught the brunt of winter salt. I have bought a few of both summer and winter cars, the summer ones are as nice as Southern rides, the winter cars are only good for interiors and engines. It IS amazing what brine can do so quickly.
2nd the Uh-oh salt does some nasty work. Hillbilly see the damage here in Pa upstate is even worse. My dad says 2 seasons up there winter and July, planted corn in snow storm in June. When I lived in S. Carolina bought a '69 Stang floors were totally rotted out so even southern cars get rust thru. Always enjoyed the Darlington tracks though ran the dirt track and it was always a party when the NASCAR races were on. Schraders team was always good to us. Wild times.
Stopped by body shop today. Here are some pics of doors stripped all way down no rot thru on outer skin. Hood all done metal work and in 2nd coat epoxy primer. You can see the car in background fenders leaning up against car. Will be getting those fenders back separately as others are ordered, will prime for me to pick up.
Yes they are making progress. Tailgate in primer. Other parts are in finish primer tinted to Indian Fire Red hood scoop, valence some other parts also. The shop uses BASF paint supplies think Diamont is the name. BASF also makes Glasurit an awesome paint worked with it many years ago at a buddy's shop.
I about broke into tears when I saw color on mine for the first time... and that was just the jams... Nice to see the progress...
Yes it was nice seeing the color when he opened the paint can lots of metallic in it. Just nice seeing that there isn't rot all over so far mainly minor spots even the seams are pretty nice for age of vehicle.
More progress body blasted. Found a few surprises but overall solid car. Pic of drivers side show a bad patch in lower rear, will replace ordering a patch panel for fairlane says needs mods to work on ranchero. We shall see. Passenger side qtr was totally replaced has one small area behind wheel to patch. Passenger front fender has a patch already done ready to finish. Most of rest nice minor rust overall.
Quater panel patch came in today will take it to body shop tomorrow after work. Do a quick check for changes to make versus Fairlane/torino body style. Hoping for nice and simple. Shall see.
Dropped the quarter panel off last night. Have to break out the stretcher, the fairlane patch panel ends up close to 6" short . Also getting a rocker panel current one on drivers side has a roll to it and was fixed back in day with lead. We will correct the roll. Passenger side had a fender hung on to line up should have door back on today to check/adjust gaps and line up. If looks better next time will grab some pics.
Well the Fairlane quarter patch don't work the wheel arch matches and about the first 4-6 inches after that the roll at bottom edge is totally different. Front fender sourced would have worked if shipper hadn't have bent it in transit, sent it back. Time to find another. Rocker panel no-go also different roll along bottom edge. Time to find other sources or come up with another plan.
Yes it does! Thanks for the illustrations Pony. Have found 2 quarters at present need to check back with body shop and see if either one was except able to them. Both in southwestern states. At least weather is breaking here so time to hit the swap meets and see what shows up. Hopefully some one starts making body panels for these cars soon. Seems 68 & 69 are kinda skipped over in this section. Have been working long days and Saturdays trying to catch up at work so doesn't leave much time to chase stuff.
Well went buy body shop today to check on stuff. Grabbed some pics the inside is coming along even has seam sealer on some of it. see pic. Finally saw the front fender that was damaged in shipping can see crease in pic Fubarred by shipper. The next pic shows the bondo about 1/4" thick on what is supposed to be a good rust free replacement panel. HAH. Body shop hasn't made up mind on rear quarter yet. So the decision was made FE reunion this weekend or Carlisle swap meet, Carlisle it is. No race fuel and burnt rubber just walking and looking for parts.
I was so glad all my panels and fenders were good to go! I was frustrated enough at this point in my build! That would have just infuriated me!
I hear ya ! Frustration, more in way that the shop wants perfect stuff. I'm more the mind get some metal and welder and make it happen. Yes it takes more than that but it is just metal. I get to frustrated I will have engine apart and go thru it just because. So far keeping my hands off of it as had it running nice satisfied with it for now. Will find what I need some where. Keep the faith.
Always... had a bit of a frustrating experience of my own this last weekend! Took Brittany down to Central Point for the Medford Rod and Custom show two Sundays ago... noticed she was not running right on the way down. Power was off, fuel mileage sucked, poor acceleration. It just got worse on the way home to the point that she was coughing and spitting by the time I got her back in the garage. Keeping in mind that it has been a while since I have done a full tune-up on a points distributor in a long while. Used to be able to do them in my sleep. But have relied on a couple people since I got Brittany on the road. Fortunately... I remembered most of what this group has said on the subject of gap/dwell, timing, fuel, and air! Long story short, and a lot of trial and error all day Sunday... I have figured out how to tune this motor on my own! Was frustrating to have it idling perfectly, but put it in gear it would just die! Several phone calls and three youtube videos, on how to best tune a Holley 735 Double pumper, I finally perfected the tune, and laid down a nice long strip of rubber, and grabbed a nice second gear chirp! Just have to keep plugging away at it. It will get there eventually!
