Instead of copying an existing design like a Stratocaster, Telecaster, or Les Paul like I've done in the past, I decided to design my own. It's based on a futuristic acoustic guitar silhouette, with stylized & intersecting guitar pick elements. Kinda like an acoustic at warp 9, or engineered for F1 racing. Alder body, 1 piece Maple neck, (3) P90 pickups, Wilkinson tremolo, and 5-way switching like a Strat. Colors are Duplicolor Lime Green Pearl body and vintage amber tinted neck, with black pickguard. The body & neck are now ready for many coats of clear lacquer, then after a month of curing, polishing & final assembly. I'm looking for ideas on a headstock color scheme; all amber, all green, all black or that carved semicircle in one color against another.
Lookin good, I would put more of an Edge on the next one, You know, to make it look more like an Axe..
Awesome work BB, id be tempted to dye the carved out semicircle in the headstock a tad darker shade to highlight it more and make the headstock look a little less bulky. I love the body shape, are you going single or multi ply on the pick guard? What scale length is it? Looking forward to seeing it complete.
Thanks Jimbob. Yeah, it's probably gonna take a few beers and a coin toss on the headstock colors. Single ply black pick guard and rear tremolo cover; I wanted the shape to be the defining element, not the details of the guard. Scale length is standard Fender 25.5".
Jimbob, I went with your suggestion, and I'm glad I did. It really brings out the 'swoopy' shape without making the headstock look too heavy.
That looks great BB. I love the way you get a visible line continuing from the edge of the fretboard running well into the headstock, culminating in that nice sharp 'hook'. It looks really good and breaks the shape up nicely. Do you have a logo or signature or something of your own you add to the headstock also?
I just noticed the truss rod access hole doesn't appear to be drilled out. Is the adjuster nut at the body end? Like some newer Fenders?
Yup. And yes, the adjustment is at the heel; not my favorite placement, but the neck had everything else I was looking for.
Yeah, they're printed on clear adhesive vinyl from the sign shop I used to work at. The 'AstroCaster' is a font I downloaded from a free fonts site, and the 'JDesign' is done in my handwriting.
Thanks guys, it was a fun project. Now I'm thinking about having it pinstriped, like Billy Gibbons does on some of his:
Billy G is a bad ass on a stick but if you can't rock flames and licks.......... Just say'n Light it from the neck...... mebby a couple exhaust pipes........ Cheers, Doc
