I bought a pair of hood hinges off of a member that have a powder coat that sort of looks like chrome. I would say it looks like "smoked" chrome, if that's such a thing. I can take some pics this weekend and post them.
Normally I see the powdercoat "chrome" more like chrome-aluminum, very similar to the coating you would see on headers when new.
Eastwood makes a powder coating , this company makes one that is closest to Chrome , https://www.prismaticpowders.com/shop/powder-coating-colors/USS-4482/super-chrome https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-extreme-chrome-bonded-powder.html nothing is going to last as long as real plating or look as bright as real nickel crome plating , for the dollar on little parts , EASTWOODS GUN FOR APPLING POWDERCOAT , IS NORMALLY 100.00 , ,SMALL OVEN TOASTER STYLE IS ALL THATS NEEDED .
First, I do not have photos. There is a guy locally who did the Eastwood powder coat on his entire grill and surround on his 72 F-100. You literally have to be within 5 foot of it to tell that it isn't real chrome. A very slight fish-eye effect is what gives it away. Looks super good !
That's what I was wondering, since I was thinking about doing that to my grille. Chroming and bright dip anodizing are out of my budget.
I’ve used the Eastwood chrome powder. It must be clear coated or it will dull quickly. How much it looks like chrome is dependant on the gloss of the clear. Higher the gloss, the more like chrome it looks.
If I do this, it will have to be done at a commercial company that can handle the size of the grille.
I had my 64 Sprint grille reanodized. It has to be stripped first ( EZ-Off oven cleaner will take off the anodizing), then it needs to be buffed, then anodized. You're right, it's not cheap, but it looks killer.
Here are a couple of pics....pretty much what Phil described and I have no idea how this compares to the Eastwood product.
Thanks Basstrix. No comparison really, but it does have more reflection than paint and may not look bad for a grille.
I've seen one done, and I don't believe you would be satisfied, let alone happy with it. Spray a scrap one with "chrome-aluminum" paint, it's almost identical.
There is no comparison in that photo. The Eastwood I saw on that guy's truck is way more convincing but looks more like polished aluminum within five feet. Ten foot and beyond it makes you wonder.
