73 Ranchero ID

    I have a 1973 Ranchero, the s/n says it has a 400 ci but the valve cover tag with the engine settings says 460above to where it has 429/460 but this motor is either 429 or 460.     I would venture the guess that your car originally came with the 400 CID engine and someone swapped a 460 into it. The very top of the sticker states it is a 460 - the engine family below just notes that it is one of the 429 / 460 family. I would assume it has a 460.

    If you can pull a plug, and measure the stroke, that would confirm the displacement. The main difference between a 429 and 460 is the stroke. Definitely no longer a 400, though.
