Hello all, awhile back I sent some pics of a studerbaker commando,I had no idea what it was,got out of work early today, went down the bat cave to clean the chero, heading up to the white mountains tomorrow and the commando was there, hood open so o took a pic, would that have been the original motor?i was told the owner is 92 and selling it
That's a Studebaker. Late 50s. A classic. He should get a pretty penny for it. I don't think it's the original motor or radiator. They did come w a V8, but not aluminum valve covers, headers or alternator.
Definitely a small block Chevy with a Caddy air filter. D J, there were aluminum valve covers back then and the options ranged up to a Paxton Supercharger. They weren't slouches either.
Like from an Avanti or in that era Carl ? Oh yeah, they did have production troubles sometime back then and bought GM engines back in the 60's. Memory of their history is slipping, did not their design engines 304 / 390/ 401 end up in AMC cars, International trucks, and Jeeps ? The heads on that small block in the pictures are newer than 64 because they have tapped holes in the ends for accessory brackets. For some reason I seem to recall a Studley engine maybe a 289, that resembled a nail head Buick too.
Studebaker V8 from the article: https://www.hemmings.com/stories/article/americas-best-v-8-engine-studebaker
1965 and 1966 Studebaker's used Chevy v8's, like I said. There’s plenty of confusion regarding the origins of Studebaker engines. Studebaker sourced 194,230 OHV six-cylinder and 283 V-8 engines from McKinnon Industries. These were Chevrolet engines built by Mckinnon under license from General Motors and they were installed in many mid-60's Studebakers.
Spoke to the broker selling it,motor is a 350 Chevy, rear end is from an a avanti and the interior seats and console are from a T bird
