I do the same and have no issues ,,Use a mini and wrap it. no heat problems ... No matter how hot is it starts..
Clark, I only had to cut a notch at the sides in front where the pinch is about an inch square,,, it never got into the actual member
I just notched the cross member at the front for my 9 quart. Couple minutes with a cutting wheel on a 4 1/2" grinder,,

I had the same issue ( wouldn't open the secondary all the way) due to a Holley and Weiand Stealth intake on mine. The Cable from the Big Block...
Should be OK as long as you aren't using Hi Rise type manifold like a Stealth ..In that case find one from a big block Lincoln that is just a tad...
Check all the grounds for that circuit...Often that is all the issue is with these Rancheros
