New to the forum, i have a 72 Squire Q code car that actually appears to have a 1970 or 71 429 Cobrajet engine in it, havent been able to look t the actual block casting # but there is a Large A stamped on pad on drivers front side of block, I think 429 but could use a little help to narrow down whether i want to go get a 351 (original for year) or build what i got, any help would be very much appreciated.

    • Drivers head stamped DOVE-A, Passenger DOVE-C
    • large A stamped on drivers side front
    • cant get a good look at the actual block casting # (broken arm) am hoping there is another way to verify exact setup.
Again, First post in a bit and i am hoping someone can help as i am more familiar with small blocks.

Thanks again for any help. Jeff

Is the large "A" stamped in, or is it a raised casting? The raised "A" is most likely a four bolt main 70 CJ or SCJ, not sure which. Intake casting number may help.

A real 429 Cobra Jet engine will not have DOVE heads, it "should" have DOOE-R cylinder head casting numbers.

The "A" as a means of ID'ing a CJ/SCJ block is a new one to me....I'll go check my 429 block (it's a thin-web 2 bolt) to see if it even has an A. I checked my D1VE block and couldn't locate the A. That one is one with the casting number that may or may not be thick web. My memory has become so crappy that I can't remember for sure, but I think I ran a bore scope up the drain plug (easy there Phil) and got the sad news.

This page has some good info on the CJ/SCJ identification. http://429mustangcougarinfo.50megs.com/components_3.htm
