I have 2 460 trucks laying around. My uncle has been bugging me about giving him free reign on a build of my '74 so I fugure why not.
1987 Econoline E35. Conversion Van or 1989 Econoline E350 (motorhome)
Would perfer to use this truck for towing. Which engine makes more sense? And any difficulties shoving a 460 in a 74 Ranchero?

The 460 will certainly fit. Ford offered them in Rancheros through 1975 (I have one). Many on this site have done the conversion.

We will need to know a few things like what transmission you have now. There will be other issues like exhaust manifolds, fan shroud, motor mounts.

I'm not sure which of those later 460's is best. The stock 460's after maybe 1972 had lots of torque but no more than maybe 180 hp. I think my stock '75 would have run fine on kerosene.

    Others can tell you more.

If the '87 is carbed, it's actually pretty good, with a Motorcraft Holley, which you can replace with a 4160 Holley, a decent cam and a '68-'72 460 timing set. Then, if it has a C6, that will fit and hook up (might need a change in the manual lever).

Ignorance speaking here. What's the difference between a "Motorcraft Holley," and a "4160 Holley?"

A 'Motorcraft Holley' is a licensed Ford copy of a Holley carb. It's usually 'dumbed down' to make it easier to manufacture. But they make modding, even light modding, hard to do. So swapping an honest-to-goodness Holley on will make the changes easier to handle.

Ok cool. Only 72k original miles on that van too. I guess that can go into the chero and I'll save the other one for something else. I hate the 80's Ford EFI systems because I've dealt with plenty of problems before. Thanks for thr info

The only problem that comes to mind, and it's your comment about the EFI that jogged my mind. The truck 460s in '84/'85 were supposed to be EFI, but California nixed it. Ford, however, couldn't change the gas tanks from electric pumps when they put those Motorcraft Holleys on top, so they plumbed a pressure bypass, to use the EFI's electric pumps but still have six PSI at the float bowl. IIRC, the engine doesn't have a mechanical pump, so you'll need to make sure it has one with a pump eccentric on the cam.

This dude is putting a 460 into a Mazda RX8, if you need some inspiration.

An overheating sleeper with a tiny radiator! I guess if he has the moxie to wedge a 460 into an RX-8, he'll figure out the cooling issues, too.

Don't these get filled with some kind of material, because they're drag cars?

460 swap into a ranchero will require some of the following parts: hope this will help with your build. done this to 4 rancheros.
    1) engine mounts 72-76 torino/montego , 74- 76 elite/cougar w/460 or 72-76 Thunderbird all where big block
    2) fan/fanshroud (from the same cars)
    3) exhaust manifolds (same)
    4) transmission C-6 short tail stock (can't use Thunderbird because different tail stock)
If your car already has a C6 from a 400 engine that trans will work fine.
    5) driveshaft 72-76 torino/montego wagon or 4 door or a ranchero that was big block C6 351 M/400/429/460
