My F 250 4X was purring like a kitten until it let the smoke out, oil dripping out of the exhaust and for the first time in my life was left on the side of the road waiting for a hook.

With any luck it is a failed seal on a worn valve guide.
Of course, if there was banging first, then it's a bigger problem.

No banging, just quit. Ironic or lucky I guess is that it was 1/2 mile from home. It still spun over when it quit. This morning it started and was blowing bluish white smoke, shut it down and came back into the home shop, walking back out I saw the fluid on the ground midway back coming from the exhaust joints.

Sounds like a possible bad turbo, my father's '03 F550's turbo went out and had oil/smoke you mentioned. THEN the real problems began. EGR cooler is another sore spot on these 6.0's as well as head gaskets. Hope they find the culprit and the damages aren't bad, to the truck and your wallet, keep us posted.

Man, if you can get the turbo checked out/resealed/rebuilt and it's your only problem at this time, that would be a relief. I'll say a few prayers, cross my fingers and knock on wood *raps knuckles on noggin* that it's the only problem

With the oil out the exhaust I'm thinking more than the turbo, it was still singing when I started it this morning and when I shut it down I could hear winding down like normal.

If things get really ugly... might want to keep it in the back of you mind, and if the money makes sense, to ditch the 6.0 and drop a 6.7 in it... My '11 F250 Lariat, mimicking Andy's knocking, has been flawless. And talking to the Diesel experts here, the 6.7's are all but bullet proof, and the shops are not, or have not seen a lot of them in for any significant major work. The first version of the 6.7 came out in '11. The '17's came with the second version. Ford Project name: Scorpion and Scorpion II. Just some food for thought!

I realize right now you just want to find out what the "real" issue is, but do yourself a favor and have the engine totally looked over by a REAL 6.0 PSD mechanic before any part replacement. Doing so will probably will save you a bunch of headaches and a fist-full of money(thousands) in the long run. Good luck and hope you get it figured out.

I have a neighbor that works at a local Ford dealership bringing over one of his diesel techs tomorrow night, my cost = Beer & Baby Backs from my smoker. Even if its bad news it should be a great night... Have to look at the bright side.

Sounds like a heck of an idea, just let him look at the truck first, discuss price after the beer(s) and ribs :D.
