Just picked up a new project. '62 Ranchero w\ 3 on the tree and 3.20's {?}. Engine is a 200 out of a 196? Mustang. Looking to make it a daily driver.
Nice. Those engines are pretty thrifty if you plan on commuting with it; if it were mine, I'd replace the point-condenser ignition with electronic, including a higher power coil, and see how much gap I could put on without sacrificing the small amount of HP and torque they make. Of course, pics are always welcome, 1MB and smaller in size.
Thanks for your input, Andy. Any preference on breakerless ignitions to use? Another thing I noticed was how high the rpm's were on the highway. At 67 mph I was at 3000. I'm thinking that's not a good for the MPG's. The rearend tag says it's a 3.20. My commute is once a week in the summer months, but it's 130 miles each way. I don't think I could stand to hear her screaming like that for 2 hours twice a week. 2.83's if I can find them? T5 swap? Which T5? Anyway, thanks for you input. I'm glad to be here.
Ooh, well, unfortunately, the 3-on-the-tree won't support an OD trans, but perhaps down the road, maybe a T-5 swap using a floor shifter? It was typical in the pre-interstate days that highways were 50-55 maximum speed, and it only became a problem after the first ones built had 70 MPH limits. Your rig is set with a decent rear gearing, you just need an overdrive to drop the RPMs at interstate speed. Wasn't there also an OD unit you could bolt to a non-OD transmission?
Here's a good source for the conversion: https://www.moderndriveline.com/sho...on-solutions/t5-5-speed/61-65-falcon-package/
