Nobody is making replacement tanks for the 70-71's. I doubt they ever will. At least twice a year someone comes on and asks this same question. Maybe if 5-6 people asked, they'd make a tank? ;) There are used ones around. You can also get one reconditioned.

    I think a 66 tank from falconpartsdepot.com will work. That's what's in my 1969

Actually, that photo looks pretty close. Flip it upside down. Mine compared to theirs. The only concern is they don't seem to know what year Ranchero to pick. If it fits a 70, it should fit a 71, and it shouldn't fit a 64.

Seems very similar with the possible exception of the venting by the filler neck.

Any one know what the piece of angle iron does apart from trap all the rubbish in behind to cause the tank to rust out? Mines not connected to anything

Correct. The less effort others have put into doing something they don't have to do, the better chance they'll do it.
To answer the 'why is that angle iron on there' question: Who knows? Maybe to strengthen up the tank? It really has no other purpose that I can figure out. If I remember, there isn't one on the back side, right?
