The application information at Summit Racing and the Scott Drake Catalog seem to indicate that, while there are two bolts on top of #3, it's for a single carburetor. Of course, the Cobra is for Shelby and not Cobra Jet. Maybe that's close enough. Hehe :)

Put a couple of snake stickers on the side and it becomes a Cobra.
Seems to work at some of the car shows I have been at. :p

The rebuilt carburetor arrived yesterday and from my limited perspective it looks good. Later today I'll hand it to the mechanic and then we'll know more. In the meantime, I took the carburetor with me to Summit and out of all the air cleaners I tried only the Cobra was able to sit flat and not hit something. If it sits too low to the distributor, a riser is included. The Scott Drake version that I posted a link to earlier was $60 higher than the Ford Racing version, which didn't show during the earlier search on Summit's website. I can't tell the difference and maybe there isn't any. In all, I purchased the air cleaner, 3 extra filters, some paint for the inspection plate and since I liked Andy's bling idea, I purchased a Ford black oval, blue isn't available, wing nut from Proform. No snake stickers. :)

Blue's not available? The bastidges! Try Jeg's. I know they offered them. And as for Shelby, there was a guy in the town my job was in who has a '72 with a 429, whom I talked to a few years ago; his rig has a set of large-diameter factory Mustang Cobra wheels. Close enough, eh?

I got my blue one from Summit. Hard to believe they don't stock it anymore. They are a lot more Ford friendly than Jegs.

Good to see somebody has them. I bought one for my '74, and I should've kept it since I sold it for $350 for parts.

Why is Ford authorizing "Black Oval" products?

Who said they are? You might have an unauthorized product there, and the copyright police may give it to you, Al Capone style.:naughty:

Many thanks for your continued interest. Unfortunately, I do not have anything new to report. After delivering the last of the parts to the shop, I have not heard anything from them. I intend on calling at the 2 week mark, which is quickly approaching.

The mechanic says he's been starting the engine each morning and the choke is working fine. Says it starts right up. However, when he drove it the other day the carburetor's secondaries are bogging when punched. I mentioned the timing and the mechanical advance, both he said were checked and they are okay. Mechanic says all rebuilt carburetors have to be 'tuned' to the vehicle. May have to split carburetor body to see what's going on inside. Going there today, will know more later.

Just a little note - make sure he is using the specs for the 4V (CJ) engine and NOT the standard engine - timing is set at 16 degrees, not 8. Float level is a little sensitive, and the accelerator pump stroke also.

The 1973 engine data that I have says that a CJ with a standard transmission is 16 degrees BTDC. But, with a automatic transmission it's 18 degrees.

Okay - just so they don't inadvertantly retard it by looking up standard 351 specs and then wondering why it won't scoot.

I tried calling a few minutes ago, but no one answered the phone. I'll try again tomorrow morning.

    Thanks for the info.

Spoke with the mechanic. He said he could set the initial timing to 18 degrees if I want, but due to elevation he felt we can get away with a little less. So, initial timing is set to 12 degrees, mechanical brings that to 27 and with vacuum to 44 degrees. When I mentioned the float level and the accelerator pump stroke being sensitive, he agreed they can be a pain and added, that it wouldn't be a problem.

Sounds like he knows what he is doing - I've run mine out west 4K - 7K altitude retarding only about two degrees, and keep the octane I put in it at around 90 Octane.

I've always thought it was the other way round about altitude -- the motor will make less compression because the air is thinner, meaning you can use more advance without pinging. Rule I've heard is one degree more of advance for every 2000 ft of altitude gain.
