    Anyone ever seen a distributor setup like this? It looks like it's chain or belt driven off the crank pulley:

    One time, a looooong time ago. I can't even remember what it was on, but it's a bit like the GM Opti-Spark, except Opti-Spark's driven off the camshaft.

    That's a Mallory, but MSD also makes one with several different mounting brackets for many engines. Never saw one with such a wide belt, though. Normally it's only 1/4" wide, as usually there's a crank trigger involved and the only thing it spins is the rotor. That one looks like a regular timing belt.

    That cap looks like a flathead crab style one . Never seen one used like that . Is that a thermostat housing on the radiator hose ?

    Yes it is. It looks like, in order to accommodate that monstrosity of a distributor, the hot water outflow comes out of the casting hole in the end of the cylinder head, and I bet the intake has been plated shut to accommodate coolant flowing past.
