Hi all, I have just bought a red 78 Ranchero GT
that came from Modesto, California, 96,000 miles on a 400 auto with C6 and 2.75 axle.
There is a very strange device fitted below the dashboard, under the HVAC controls, which has a pipe and wiring to it, with two levers, spring loaded, cannot imagine what this is for !!!
It has Brougham trim, but manual windows, all instrument lights not working, only the wiper switch light, and no ignition or seatbelt light either, lots of wiring has been messed with,
as a Jensen "night glow" radio added in place of the original radio, and a 12 CD changer and 440watt amp behind drivers seat !!
This Ranchero was shipped to UK late 2019,
I wonder if anyone knows it when it was in CA?
It would be nice to speak to the previous owner if I could find a way to contact him?

I wonder if the strange device might be a rear air shocks controller?

    Welcome!

Can you send a picture of the device under the A/C panel? I wonder if it isn't a brake line lock or something of that sort...

It sounds like a trailer brake controller. However, if it is, it sounds like it's hooked into the brake hydraulics. I have little faith in those kind of controllers. But we need pics, and if you can find a name, model number, etc., you can google them, find out what it really is.

    Welcome to the site.

I would think that the Government office in charge of imports would know where it came from, i.e. who shipped it/where it was picked up. But if its like here, they probably want a small fortune to have someone look into it.

Hi all, thanks for the quick replies !

I do have the name & address of the owner in Modesto, CA, as the Ranchero came with a set of workshop manuals in a box addressed to him.
And his name is also on the Title, of which I have a copy.
I googled his name, came up with a phone #,
tried a skype call a few times, but no success,
I think the calls were blocked?
As regards the strange device mounted below dashboard, if you grip it with left hand, the thumb grip squeezes to the left against an internal spring, and returns back, I have tried it a few times but appears not to do anything!
The rear shocks are white, and have plastic tubes connected half way up, so I guess they are air shocks, I found a schrader valve mounted in the floor behind drivers seat, so I guess thats where they can be pressurised?
I am not familiar with such systems yet...

Bear with me, I found it very hard to post the previous text, I get to preview ok, but theres nothing obvious as to how to send the text !!

I’m with Handy Andy. Your description sounds like an electric trailer brake controller.
