Yes, I think it would be much safer if the engine stayed in place than flying through the air with a rolling vehicle. I can just picture that thing flying through the windshield landing on my lap.
Hard to work up much sympathy for obvious driver error. Lived in the area for a while, played on that road with a long bed pickup and didn't need a spotter. The easy parts of that road are where that driver dropped the ball, if you can see the power house you can drive an older long Suburban with no problems. The tricky off camber and slick rocks are up at the top of that road. Inexperienced driver who couldn't visualise her vehicle's footprint and a spotter who probably was swatting mosquitoes. I just hope they don't close that road to save more snowflakes from Darwin Awards.
I wouldn't care what the rest of the car does if the person inside survives. Engine mounts are cast aluminum and rubber. You get a car spinning, that's a lot of force, especially when you add some hard acceleration events when it bounces.
I would feel no remorse about that Andy. We all are guilty of making idiot moves every single day. The trick is to learn from the mistakes and not repeat them. Hopefully we retain all our fingers and toes while learning.
