Guys I need your expertise. After turning on my AC the fuse to my blower motor blows after about 5 minutes. The AC does work on all speeds. The clutch pulley spins freely. I did replace the blower motor about a year ago. It isn't making any strange noises it just pops the fuse. Any suggestions is appreciated.
Might try checking all connections in the circuit and if you feel it is worth it, pull the fan and see if it spins free with no junk in the housing. Good luck.
That could be the resistor which controls the speeds. Not familiar with the 72 but should be found somewhere on the blower housing. Should have a plug connection and looks like a coiled spring on the inside.
Well then, sorry I misunderstood. My best guess is still check power and ground connections. Was the new motor a direct fit or "universal" meaning maybe new motor pulls a few more amps than expected? There is an answer, somewhere.
It was a direct fit and worked for about 5 months. The fuse just started blowing a few weeks ago. I will keep checking Jeff.
Are you sure the 1972 model has a blower motor relay, the 1979 GT does not. Have you measured how much current it draws at maximum speed, how big a fuse do you have on the blower motor?
The part is called blower motor resistor. It's what makes the fan motor spin at different speeds. Whenever there is a blower problem that is the first place I look.
I have a 30 Amp fuse. I am not sure they have one on a 72. I have found the resistor but not the relay.
I have found the resistor but have read that it is good if your ac runs on multiple speeds and tge relay is the issue if it blows the fuse only on high speed. I have checked the connector at the switch and wiring and it all looks good. I did replace the blower motor last weekend and that wasn't the issue. Wiring is not my specialty for sure.
The 1979 GT originally had a 35A glass tube fuse. But when I rewired the car, I measured the current drawn by the blower motor at maximum speed, and it only drew about 15A, so I put a 20A MAXI fuse in it. I would guess that the blower motor in my car is original. I don't know what a "TGE relay" is, my car doesn't have a relay for the blower motor.
I feel compelled to write here ... my '71 came with a 30 amp fuse, also plugged into a standard size fuse holder. It was old when I bought the car, so I presume there was a reason for it to be there. Could be a large current draw is that is the first item when it is turned on... guessing.
Does anybody know where the relay may be on the 72s for the AC? It is supposed to be on the firewall but I have had no luck finding it.
