A Chevy AND Ford factory option?

My owner's manual has about one full page with a drawn picture stating that Rancheros are NOT to be used for slide in campers so I doubt that it is a factory option.

Likely not for an El Camino either.
They had a load rating something like 500 pounds

Looks to be fiberglass instead of a metal shell with a bird cage frame, that would make it to heavy right off the bat, but the slant to the back window looks pretty close.

I've never seen one of those things on the road, now I see why.

This stuff comes from the days when people would make anything and before product liability lawsuits got to be fashionable and after about 40 years of folk lore associated with the stuff it becomes "facts". Like my Mustang wagon I built back in the 70s I still hear people at shows telling others about it being a factory job when it's always shown as custom built.
