Does anyone know where I can by a 429 crankshaft or remanufactured crankshaft kit? I have a 460 I want to convert to a 429 and put it in my 79 ranchero. Thanks. GW
I have to ask...I realize it's yours and you have every right to do with it as you please, but why would you want to give up 31 cubic inches and have the relative scarcity of piston choices when going to a 429? Just asking
Don't believe everything you hear - if you already have the 460 stuff, use it. There has NEVER been any substitute for cubic inches.
One good thing about a 429 is putting 429 heads on your 460. That and a decent cam now has my '75 460 running 400 hp on the engine dyno and that is not radical for a 460.
Proper camshaft selection needs to include things like compression ratio, cylinder head mods/valve job, intake manifold, rear gear, trans/converter, and above all, intended usage. 429 heads (closed chamber) will indeed raise compression, maybe too much, depending on piston choice. And they will require hardened seats installed on the exhaust side. Take your time, and be realistic about your use, and the outcome will be better.
Totally agree with you Phil. It took me a solid month just to find the correct or rather the best available "off the shelf" grind camshaft choice for my late son's 472 BBF. Figuring in compression ratio-both in static and dynamic compression ratios, valve overlap, lobe separation angle, intake centerline and etc that would complement the rest of the build. As you undoubtedly already know, there's lots of math to get "figured" out.
This is what went into my 460. Hillbilly, no longer with us, and Mike Osborne the machinist, no longer with us as well, came up with the build set.
