    Found this in the back of an old Dearborn Classics Catalog and thought I'd post it here. So it could be of some use.

    I'm trying to scan all my info such as that into my computer, it makes it easer to find what I want when I want it. Also some of it is getting so old it is starting to disinigrate as we speek.

  5. Hey everyone, what's up? I must be stupid or something but I don't see ANYTHING that relates to my car on the door. Ok here it is:

    Body = 66E
    Color = 3
    Trim = TE
    Axle = 6
    Trans = W
    DSO = 56

    I dunno if this is the right door data plate. Its the only one on there but it just doesn't match anything. I have a 1971 Ranchero Squire with a 302 2v and a C4 transmission. It's red in color with wood grain on the side. Red interior with a bench seat. Front power disk brakes (11" I believe)and a power steering (Thompson Slipper)pump. No AC. Umm, all I wanted to know is about the rear end and what kind of ratios I have to work with. Any help would be great! Thanks everyone!

    Hey guys...I just found this site and now am a new member. Got a question on the door dataplate info. Why is the vin number on this plate different from the one on the dash that you see thru the windshield? I have 2A48H237651 on the plate and 3A48H291259 on the dash. MY vehicle is a 1972 Ranchero GT.

    Also can someone decode these numbers for me:

    Body 97R
    Color 3B
    Trim FB
    Trans W
    Axle 6
    DBO 72

    Thanks......Bruce.

    maybe the dash was replaced?

    97R - Ranchero GT
    3b - Light blue
    FB - med. blue vinyl
    W - C4 automatic
    6 - 3.00 open
    72 - built in San Jose

    H engine code is 351 2V

    Welcome aboard....and what does the title say....that is important...you might have a 73 Ranchero with 72 parts....

    Thanks for the info. I was also thinking maybe the dash had been changed out because I would think the dataplate number would be correct. However, the title does have the dash number. But I know this is a 72 because of the grill and the dash gauges.

    Is there any other way to make sure?

    Maybe this was a builder and it originally is the 72 and they replaced that rear quarter up to the door jam due to a crash.... that would seem extreme to me... If I'm remembering correctly there is also a place in the engine compartment that would indicate the correct information. But that might be on an older Ranchero. Oh and the guages on the dash...are pretty much the same up thru 76... :D FYI

    Anyhow, welcome aboard...my bad.... Glad to see yet another famous beautiful fish mouth on site...we'd love to see pictures of your machine. And you've definitely found the perfect place to get the information you are looking for.

    Welcome Bruce... you found a very interesting site. lots of good Folks..
    You have a 72/73? Does the door tag look to be intact and not stuck on? irregularities? I know here in NM they have have to see two different places to verify the vin# to register the truck. Someone posted awhile ago that the vin# on the 72+ is somewhere behind the plastic stone gaurds behind the front wheel in the fender wheel, I am going to look this week-end and see if it is true...
    Welocome once again, glad to see yet another 72...

    Thanks for the welcome and the info. I really do think it is a 1972, and I do have some other questions regarding it. I got it last year and it was in pretty good shape, I have not had to do much. I had a 1969 Ranchero several years ago and when I was in college, I had a 72 Gran Torino Sport and a 69 Mach 1. I have always liked cars from the 60s and early 70s.

    I would like to post a picture of mine on here but what is the best way to do it? I see yours is attached at the bottom of your email and I think I saw it somewhere else on this site, maybe in a member's gallery.

    Later.....Bruce

    Thanks CJ....I will look in the morning to see if there is something in the wheel well. I think the dataplate is the original, but I will look at that again too. I also remember that I could not read the vin on the dash real good, as it was scratched. I had to look on the title to get the correct number.

    So I think the dataplate number is correct. And appreciate the welcome...so far seems like a good site with a good bunch of folks.

    Looking forward to meeting others and getting some questions answered regarding my car.

    .........Bruce.

    It looks like someone switched paperwork on the car... swapped the dash because it has the vin plate on it and ran the paper from that. You will have a major pain in the ass to straighten it out if you want to get it registered as a 72.

    I looked this morning and did not find anything in the wheel well, at least not on the driver's side.

    Sara is working on getting some pictures posted, and here is some info on the car. It is the GT, with a 351 Cleveland with headers. I added some glasspacks to give it the rumble I remember from those days in the early 70s. It has been repainted but kept the original baby blue color with the broad side stripes. Interior is in good shape with the bench seatrecovered in the velvety cloth material, even on the door panel.

    Got one other question on the data plate info. There are some other codes on it, such as:

    GVWR 5348
    Gawr Front 2597
    Rear 2922

    Can someone tell me what these mean?

    Thanks.......Bruce.

    PS...Special thanks to Sara for helping me with the pictures.

    that is the wieght that the truck was built to hold. you don't want to exceed that or there are problems.

    So I guess the rear is 2927, and I am sure that includes the empty weight plus whatever the load is? How much of that is existing, probably at least 2000 so I could add no more than 1/2 a ton in payload? I also added some air shocks in the rear just to keep the bed from sitting to low when full.

    I like this site....getting a lot of questions answered. And i have plenty more too.

    Got several questions concerning fixing things on my car, so I want to ask what is the best way to use the site? Do I go to the forum first and find the one that applies, then pick the topic from that forum, and then ask my question there? Or do I just ask it here since I started here, even though it does not pertain to VIN numbers anymore. And if I ask it in the appropriate place, how do people know I asked the question so that some one can answer it?

    I just want to use the site the correct way so that I can get some questions answered.

    Thanks......Bruce.
