Will a shaker solve clearance problems under the hood?

  3. Perhaps... but the HEI distributor clearance is your real problem!

    Hello ladies and gentlemen,

Its been a while since I posted, so I thought I would post a few pics of my engine compartment progress over the years... Here is a link to the album...

This weekend I managed to install a stock D0VE block with stock 429 crank and stock Cobra Jet heads and a Stock Ford high rise intake. It took forever to gather all the parts at relatively affordable prices.

I installed a CVS Racing Ford big block serpentine belt system w/ AC, a new power steering box and a custom Hydroboost braking system (www.hydratechbraking.com). I have yet to try to fit the new Hi-Rise Shaker kit. I ordered from fordramair.com. I will give it to the body guy who will have to cut the hood next. I have some concerns that the shaker won't clear the HEI distributor properly or the hood properly so it may need some custom modification.

I have concerns about having relocated the AC compressor to the passenger side of the vehicle. This was the only Serpentine kit option I could find without spending $5k. I think hood clearance might be an issue and I will now need all new custom hoses for the AC. The AC now has an Old Air Products expansion valve and new dryer and I will have to find a place to mount the AC muffler thingy tube (I have no idea what that thing is called) that goes on the high pressure AC line from the compressor to the expansion valve.

The high rise intake scares me because clearance from the top of the carb to the hood was minimal with a low-rise. Now I am going to be maybe an inch and a half from the bottom of the hood line to the carb bowl. By the way, if you can find a stock DOVE block high rise, it will be about 3/4" of an inch shorter than a Weiand high-rise intake and it should flow just as well.

Other upgrades... Hooker Super Comp Headers and Flow Master Collectors with Single Chamber Muffler and 3.25" pipes all the way through. Rebuilt C-6 Transmission. Painless Wiring Harness. New Gauges, New Custom Carpets and Headliner. 9" Rear End with 3.73 gears, Holley 750cfm street/strip carb, New Racing Radiator, Relocated Battery in custom steel box behind passenger seat. New bluetooth stereo with 10" woofers. Custom Yellow 3 Point Seatbelts.

Anyway, enjoy the album... and please let me know if you have a solution to any of my problems.

I guess you have your reasons for using an HEI on a performance engine.
I had to customize a fiberglass hood to run a mid rise with a 1/2" spacer on the 521 in my 72. A big engine needs a big air cleaner. 14" is the minimum. IIRC the shaker has a 12 or 13". Also, I don't see you getting any clearance using it as it doesn't have a dropped bowl and the air cleaner sits below the hood.

Very nice. You've really got to be proud of that.

    Looking forward to more progress.
