I didn't hear of it in 73 because movies were the furthest thing from my 18 year old mind.

Yep, the driver is Barry Newman. He was also the driver in Vanishing Point, not the crappy remake, but the 1971 original.

Seen that chase, but not the movie. I managed to find Crazy Mary Dirty Larry on DVD a few years back. if you remember The Fall Guy, the opening sequence features the end scene from that film, where the Charger hits the train.

We're the same age...29. Mom (and sometimes Dad) always took us to the drive-in (imagine a family of seven in a '66 Galaxie 500, a '71 Club Wagon and a '66 Delta 88. So yeah, I remember Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry, Vanishing Point (double feature there), along with a whole host of other car movies, war films, horror flicks, Disney (The Love Bug, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, That Darned Cat, Robin Hood), etc.
