Ok, so after not having time to work on the Ranchero, I got around to putting the carb back on. It's been about a month since I've done anything with it. We had taken the top off and cleaned it, including the float and everything else. Today I started it up, but it would only run for a few seconds. Anyway, when I press on the accelerator pump, I see little mists of has spraying out of the top.. any ideas?
Sounds like the accelerator pump is working. We need more details. Did it start just once and die? Or will it run for a short time every time it is started?
OK, that's what I have. Have you removed just the top to ensure the float bowl's full and the float's up?
Sounds like a jet is clogged and it is running on the accelerator pump alone. Will it keep running if you modulate the gas pedal? if so, a clogged jet it is. There is a small possibility of a very low float setting also.
Choke is set wide open because my uncle screwed with it. Runs if I pump the gas, but not if I just hold it. Checked the float when I put it back together
I'll add my stroke here; change that screw-in filter that is on the front of the bowl. It can get =almost= plugged but will still flow enough fuel to allow the accel pump to work, or to run it for a minute or two. If that didn't fix it, keep it for the day when it does plug up.
I'm just going to have to buy another carb. My uncle told me he dropped the vain body that holds the jets in the dirt. There are tiny rocks in there that I can't remove
I actually tried that, got a few out, but mot all. He also broke the choke spring, so once it is cold, it stays shut and will only open by hand
Sounds like you know what will work best for you, tell your uncle to find the muffler bearing and work on that. With all due respect to your uncle at least it will keep him busy.
He is kind of an idiot sometimes. Focuses on 6 things at a time. Does things without telling me, but oh well. THATS LIFE
