Afternoon all,so my 67 has been running great, until I got gas at an irving gas station I never used before ,right after I filled up I started it up and it started hard, drove it back to the bat cave, seemed to be running ok,that was Friday, went to start it on Monday and it would crank over but would not start, pulled off the air cleaner, opened the butterfly valve thought perhaps I flooded it,could not smell gas,I ran the battery down so threw the charger on it,came back on Tuesday after work ,again cranked over but would not start, took off the air cleaner, stuck a screwdriver to keep the butterfly valve open and it was trying to start, after about 10 try’s it started, took it out for a long ride,it would hesitate when I punched it but it ran ok,wasted a half tank(ouch)stopped at the Irving gas station I normally go to and filled up,every time I shut it off and started it it started right up,went to start it today, same thing!got it running and once it was started it ran good, was hoping too take it out on Saturday to a car show but don’t want to have the same issues, any thoughts or help would be appreciated, happy Memorial Day to all!
First thing I would do is change the fuel filter. Maybe filling the tank dislodged some debris and sent it down the line. No offense, but Memorial Day is not a time for happy.
I agree with 1978GT; start with the cheap fixes first. Another possibility that my buddy experienced was water in the gas station's tank. His Harley and several other cars all stuttered to a stop after filling. The station paid to have all the vehicles repaired.
Agree on the water. FYI, water won't go away if it is a more than a shot glass or 2. IF it clears with fresh fuel then great. If not, even if it is painful, drain the tank and flush the lines and get a fresh load of fuel. Drain the carb and see how she runs. Sometimes Seafoam may help, but it can only do so much. Good luck.
Fill up a gas can with fresh super, (bring a funnel if needed) and go ride around until the tank is empty, or incredibly close, that way any bad gas (or water-laden gas) is gone from the tank.
Clark, you being an engineer should know that "normal" unleaded fuel contains ethanol, which already has the ability to absorb water - adding even more will not make things better, quite the contrary, it WILL make it worse.
How true, assuming he uses ethanol gasoline which I refuse to use. Just another reason I hate ethanol gasoline because it attracts water.
