The car is a 1979 Ranchero but it has a 6.6 engine. Some sources say to put 4.7 liters of oil in there when the oil filter is still empty and some sources say 5.7 liters when the oil filter is still empty. What is the correct amount of oil when I change the oil and empty the oil filter?
This would support what the oil dipstick shows. This car has been out of service for a long time, last summer I took it into use for the first time in a long time and I don't remember how much oil was put in it, I have filled it previously according to the oil dipstick, max. the upper limit of the safe line. The oil dipstick is the correct, as far as I know D5AE-6750-AB Last summer it was serviced and according to the invoice 1.5 Gallons of oil were put in, I did notice that the oil level on the dipstick was above the upper safe line, but I thought that the mechanic would know how much oil to put in. Last week I drained the oil and it came out to 5.2 liters + what was in the oil filter. I put in a new empty oil filter and 4 liters of oil and let the engine run for a while and when it had cooled down I checked the oil level on the dipstick, it was at the upper safe line. Maybe there was some old oil left in there. I guess it's better to trust what the dipstick shows, or should I add oil a little more...?
I don't believe 4 liters is enough, and 1.5 gallons is too much. When you drain and refill with a new filter, add 5 US quarts, run it a bit, and make a new reference mark on the dipstick.
This is a good plan, I'll do that next time I change the oil. I need to drain ALL the old oil out of the engine, I think I was a bit hasty last time when I drained the oil and the front of the car was a little high, I think there was still some old oil left in there.
Drain all the existing oil? That would require a motor rebuild to empty all the existing oil. It's not that much mixing.
I believe he was referring to the angle of the bottom of the pan - if the drain plug is in the front and it was up fairly steep in the front, I could see some oil being left in there.
