That actually doesn't apply as much as it used to. I mean, You do not want to leave your rig at a trailhead, then march 25-30 miles, only to take down a nice-sized buck and break your back trying to get to it. No, you want a place where you can drive your rig in, without ATVs or cycles, and be able to reach emergency services if needed. I do get the joke you made, but I think it doesn't apply as much as it did twenty years ago.
20 years ago, we didn't have cell phones like today. OR the coverage. I think I got my first flip phone 20 years ago, and if I was more than a mile from the asphalt, I lost signal. It is nice to have a signal, sometimes. On my trip this year, at camp I had 1 bar @ 4G some of the time. Usually, I had no signal or a weak 3G signal. But about a half mile away, I had 5 bars @4G. When we had signal, cells were actually more reliable than the radio's we had. And we were using onX to know where everyone was. So yeah, I like the technology. But... when hunting, hate the convenience. Most of the time.
Unfortunately cell service is more prevalent than it used to be. Used to be spotty at best in area we hunt past few years have to search for the spot that you can't find a signal. We find them better than the radios to keep in touch, radios won't work in some of the areas. Only hunt deer on about a 400 acre lease no motorized vehicles allowed on the property.
No bragging here, merely the tally > John got an 8 point buck opening day morning... Then opening day evening hunt, I shot a "knot noggin" buck (no horns, just knots) and John shot a 200pound sow... Then later on, I shot two does right behind each other (one is a piebald) then an 8 point... A 300 pound sow I been feeding for two years got out her pen, so we put her in the freezer too... I still got a buck tag open, John got his Two bucks already... I still got 8 doe tags and John`s got 10 doe tags still, BUT the freezer is FULL... No elk to report on my trip.Saw a lot of mule deer,but no sign of elk anywhere in my zone.My son and I moved camp three times and put 120 miles on the razor searching to no avail.Had a great time with my boy.My neighbor tagged a really nice Nevada bull on his trip,so Ill be mooching burger from him...
My neighbor and his son got Roosevelt Elk. He brought me a package of steaks... OMG!!!! they were good.
That's why it's hunting and not getting. Always appreciate the hunt whether getting or not . Great time to commune with nature and clear the mind. Got my 2 doe this year while clearing the mind. Gave me the clear time to evaluate a business purchase. Take on the $1.5 mil deal and risk all or not. Cons won so I pulled out of deal. But I get deer steaks out of it !!! Not to mention time spent with other hunters that I like.
Yes, last night 10 Georgia whitetails were in the field, one buck... It was enjoyable just watching all of them, come out to graze in the clover field... Then something spooked `em and I watched them disappear back into the woods... Came out 1 & 2 ata time, but disappeared all together I Love that time spent with God, Dennis
Well back from Turkey hunting. Got Dad a nice bird a little over 9" beard and 1" spurs, huge breast each half will make 2 meals . Me none they wouldn't cooperate after guiding Dad to his bird. We had put Dad's bird to bed the night before. Next morning got out there in the truck he stepped out, loaded and shot the bird. Don't get much better than that ! Guess I should up my "guide" fee. LOL Did get to see a newborn Bambi and that was pretty neat to see. Usually get to see at least one every year. Had one bird strut in the middle of the road when changing hunt area, right in front of a house.
Didnt draw Nevada.Should know results in a couple weeks Utah,Colorado.Winter took a toll on mule deer herds from what I have read.
LS, Heard it was ruff on the animals out west. Lots of die off. PA cut the doe tags here for the area I hunt. Missed out on alligator tags for Fla this year didn't get drawn for them. As is: Yep always neat to see them little ones, small and frail, wobbly on their feet.
Went to cabin last weekend had to cut lawn and check on place. Checked trail cams got a couple bears on them and some deer with little ones. The bigger bear showed up a week after we left and the smaller one was there the day before I arrived. A couple deer came out of woods about 20 minutes after I got done mowing one hung out around the meat poles ! I asked if she wanted to reserve a spot !! Got to whack a groundhog , vermin doing crop damage eating the clover I planted.

The fauna are developing nicely this year, and plenty of them. Sadly, you can't shoot them here in the neighborhood...the rich floggers would have a lot to say.
Hello folks. I just came across the hunting thread. Getting out into the bush is important to me. And hunting goes with it. Mostly moose. We have a lot of wolves around also, and bears of both color. We built a remote log cabin on 20 acres of land we staked. In the middle of kazillions of state land. We fly out in the summer and then hike 2 miles north. Or snogos in the winter. We are at the base of Mt Denali. Calling in our son's first moose was a treat, 58" non typical. Huge moose near 1400 pounds. We hear the wolves regularly. My beautiful wife n me listened to a pack of wolves take a moose down one evening near a hundred yards in front of the cabin. Hunting n trapping, moose antler hunting or just going for a walkabout, makes me feel wonderful. Sitting by moms pond, a little pond in front of the cabin, and watching the sun set. And the critters start to come out. Pretty cool. Nice to be able to sit n relax and watch the world turn. After 5-6 years of hauling freight to build the cabin. Dreaming about hanging out with the family while riding a snogo under the northern lights dancing above. Well below 0 . Stop n turn the snogo off in a clearing, lay back and breathe in the cool air take a sip of whiskey n have a cigar. Just me n the world. I like my ol iron but getting out in the bush with family or good friends hunting moose, wolves, bears. In a remote place surrounded by rugged big mountains. Yeah that's really good tooooo
