I had a yard sale a few weeks ago and was approached by a guy that said he had a 72 Ranchero he wanted to sell for $500. I called him today and we talked about it and heres what he told me. It has a 460/C6 Color is Primer Grey Water pump and transmission leaks Interior is rough, bucket seats Right fender has some damage which had an attempted repair No cancer(rot through rust)only surface rust Column shift Clear Title Is the vehicle Ive described worth $500. Im going to go look at it on Sunday. What are some areas of the car I need to pay particular attention to when I look at it.Any areas prone to rust? Anything else special I need to pay attention to? If I get it,I know ill need to put tires and wheels on it that hold air,the vehicle has been sitting for 3 years.Whats the bolt pattern of the wheels on this vehicle. Thanks everyone
Im actually a Mopar guy(I know BOOO) and thus I need to get some info on what to look for when I do go to check this thing out.
water pump is an easy fix... the tranny... you can have built for probably 500, if you don't have serious rust issues and you don't mind putting some blood and sweat into it... you could have an awesome ride... RED was not a beauty when I bought him for 2300 and I'm not sad I made the decision... I love that truck... to me its worth it...
the major cancer spots will be behind the wheels in all four quarters.... look in the cubby behind the seats to see if there is any moisture there.... I would climb under the truck and look at the floor pans as rust hides there.... rust also lurks in the inside fender wells of the engine compartment just above the shocks.... also you will see bubble if its in the wheel wells... I'd also look in the bed next to the cab for rust there... oh and definitely look at the moulding and rubber around the back window... found some there myself this last year... also get the vin number if you can we can research it further for you [ December 14, 2007, 11:23 PM: Message edited by: sarah ]
The VIN would be nice to see. You may or may not be looking at a GT [my Chero looks like a GT but the VIN says R500]. You can believe what Sarah has said.
Bolt pattern should be 4.5x5 . If you pass on it let Giska know. Also if it is a 460 that would not be a stock engine for a 1972 Ranchero. 429 would be the largest stock engine in a 1972 Ranchero. The fifth digit in the VIN is the engine code and if that is a "N" than it was built with a 429.
Hi, and welcome to you, as Trikar says i'm interested, but Sarah said it first so offcaurse she gets it. If its a Ca car the rust is not a big deal.Dont think AZ is any problem. The Vin may be 2A47Nxxxx then its a 72 500 with an 429. if it sayes 2A48 its a GT if 2A49 Its a Squire Also look if it has the scoop on the hood (Option on 500)and a rally intruments 5 small on the right side of cluster. its an option on all. If the win sayes an H instead of the N its a 351 orig. Q will be the more rear 351 Cobra Jet. Good luck. I am interested in a 72 with no rust issues and a 429 or 460 auto already innstalled but rust free is the most important for me. Engine and tranny is an easy fix. I've got some bb ford engines here allready. I can take it of yor hand and you earn some Ranchero$$$ but Sarah first to get it. [ December 15, 2007, 05:21 AM: Message edited by: Giska ]
yep welcome aboard if it's got some quarter panel damage just send it to scandinavia we are well known to take all rancheros with that kind of damage , just kidding, at 500$ i'd buy it but if you don't giska do, and I'm sure that Sarah won't mind waiting for another one [ December 15, 2007, 05:32 AM: Message edited by: Brian engel ]
well if you do get one with a little rust in it just ship over here and I'll have a look at it,..... it might take a year or so before I have some time have a couple of projects to finish, but if necesary I'll sqeece it in
Nobody mentioned to this potential new owner (and new member, welcome) that the 1972 is often referred to as 'the Fishmouth' due to its somewhat strange looking large front grille opening.
So being that this is a "Fihmouth" grille car,and apparently only built 1 year, does this make it anymore desireable or valuable than other Rancheros? Or is it the opposite, that it may have been the most hideous ,undesireable year? What does the concensus say among collectors?
I have two '72's if that means anything. I see alot of what is for sale and as far as the Full Frame Ranchero built from 1972-1979, the 1972 model seems to be the one that gets the most $$$ The 1973 Ranchero had the higest production of any Ranchero Model followed by the 1972 Model year.
