got a new coil because the old one quit working. Now I can’t get no power or anything out of the coil. I tried new condessors and points still nothing. It’s a 1964 ranchero with the 170.

Also I’ve tried other coils and the red-green wire that goes to the coil has power

Use a meter to make sure your points are closing.

Do you have a 12 volt test light? If you do, it will indicate A) that there is power on both primary posts with the key on, but engine not running, and B) if the points are actually controlling the negative side, as the light will flash. You should also check your connection to the side post on the points; even I've flubbed that. Not to say that that's what you did, but it never hurts to check.

Try running a wire from the positive side of the coil to the positive side of the battery and see if it'll start. It it starts, then you have a problem with getting power to the coil.

Check lead from points to coil for chaff to ground. Or a broken wire from point pivot plate to dizzy body

    Coil spark test:
    1. Put a spark plug on the output wire, and make sure the plug is grounded.
    2. Disconnect the points wire from the (-) side of the coil.
    3. Turn the ignition ON. Make sure BATT voltage on the (+) side of the coil.
    3. Connect a wire to ground on ONE END, and just tap the other side on the (-) side of the coil.
Should make a nice fat spark on the plug.

    If good, try the points.
    1. Turn the ignition OFF.
    2. Connect the points wire to the (-) side of the coil as normal. Remove the disty cap.
    3. Bump the starter key to get the points stopped OPEN.
    4. Turn the ignition ON.
    5. Twist the disty back and forth so the points open and close.

Should get a nice spark that way.
