I plugged a usb charger into the cigarette lighter to charge my phone and when I turned off the beast (64 Ranchero) and took out the key the usb charger stayed on and the phone kept playing. Is it supposed to do that? If not, what could it mean?

Thats so you can light your cigar without turning the ignition on...

Yes, that is how they are designed through that period. Handy for lighting up, or using a plug in device available in that era.

At least the plug in spot light works, as does that 12V auto vacuum, and there was a 4 track player in a box available sometime in the 60's...

Mine works that way, too. So does my '67 F250. I've never chased down the wiring, but I am "assume-ing" that it's supposed to work that way.

It is always powered and there is a breaker built in to the back of the lighter socket-no fuse.

Even into the '80s they were that way. Originally, as 72GTVA mentioned, it was so you could light up with the ignition off, because of the points, but Ford and GM kept that going for a long time after electronic ignition. Hell, my 2000 Century has constant power to the lighter. I have to verify I pulled the charger out before leaving the car.

Every car I've ever owned was like that - from a '54 ford to a '18 Yukon (OK, the yukon's my wife's. But my old expedition does too).

That was always my go to constant hot source before I was old enough to know what a volt meter was or afford it.

    Cheers,
