Pud is at 100,618 miles as of now. I don't really know what it needs to daily drive. It's supposedly got a dying at idle issue but I'm wondering if the loose battery cables may just be the cause.

I don't know, but I don't have a code sniffer anyway. Do you?

that would be nice... if its just loose cables...if not... arent Festivas more of a Mazda product?.. if so.. the usual notorious suspects...are...
1.Throttle body grime build up creating a vacuum causing problems with idle/cold startup. Just get some spray cleaner for TB's
    2. IAC valve ... idle air valve sensor.. ..try cleaning it..
    3. Clogged egr tubes..or clogged egr valve...

all these things are easy "Clean and check things" Mazda motors are notorious for a "sooty" type build up... and cleaning will only cost you about $3.50 for a can of throttle body cleaner..

Bah I say to you! Mazda? Heck no, these babies are pure Kia. They sold as the Pride overseas. Even had a four door wagon version.

Yes, and they are not a waste of money. The beauty of these things is they will tell you what is wrong with them and the code scanner pays for itself in one use.

... bought an '88 Tempo ($400.00 Rancherobuck$$$) in '95 - it needed a head gasket, I just went ahead and overhauled it (that cost $500.00 Rancherobuck$$$). Got the code scanner, it told me the EGR was bad, replaced it, told me the PFFE tube was bad, replaced that, voila! We put another 125,000 on it in 10 years by multiple family members before donating it (and got a $900.00 Rancherobuck$$$ off of my taxes for what it sold for), still running well. Every once in a while would get a check engine light and the car might be running rough, run the code, go get the exhaust / O2 sensor or clean the EGR or something else minor, fix the problem, clear the codes would turn out the light and the car ran great! That car was really a good, reliable, basic transporation vehicle that while I hated it's looks I couldn't complain about the car aside from the fragility of the tie rod ends.

Nah, just take it to Autozone and get it checked for free. Save your money for some of those neon lights that you mount under the car.;)

I'm using an Actron CP9175 for my '00 Crown Vic and '05 Taurus. It was about $69.00 Rancherobuck$$$ on sale at Rock Auto, or Tool Topic, or Auto Parts Giant - one of the online places that send me SPAM all the time... I think normally they are around $125.00 but you can find them cheaper.

They are really good though - I will occasionally plug it in and let it run the complete diagnostic while driving to or from work... tells me how many misfires, assesses emission performance and tells me when something is out of spec, and all in plain english -- it displays "misfire on #6" and it is right. Good thing to have and worth the money for cars so equipped.

For the Tempo (ODB I) I had another one, gave it away after I got rid of that car) that wasn't as user friendly (had to count beeps and such and then look up a code in the book) but it was the same thing really - told me what was wrong and very little easter egging to find a control or sensor issue.

Well, it's a 92. Not sure if it has ODB-I, II, or any... how can you tell?

Owners manual should tell you, if not, look for the diagnostic connector. If it is only about 3 or 4 or 5 horizontal blades on the "test" connector under the hood it is ODB I. If it resembles a LPT port with about 20 pins and is under the dash above the drivers' right knee it is ODB II.

Yeah, probably ODB I - but... if you can get one that does both do it!!! It will be useful on your newer cars as well as usable on your "Pud".

    The SHOgun
In 1990, Chuck Beck of Special Editions and Rick Titus took seven Festivas, gutted the interiors, and mounted Ford SHO 3.0 L V6s behind the front seats to make the car mid-engined. There were substantial cosmetic and mechanical changes, including relocating the gas tank to the front of the car, structural bracing and improvements to the chassis, adding wider wheel arches to accommodate a wider stance and larger tires, and a complete redesign of the suspension. These changes resulted in a car that could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds, travel the ¼ mile (0.4 km) in 12.9 seconds at 100.9 mph (162 km/h), and could achieve a lateral acceleration figure ranging from .95 to 1.04 g [1]. Of the seven, Jay Leno owns the silver one, which is number 003 [2].
