After our trip to the Summit All Fords Show&Shine saturday, Rusty decided she likes Low Gear now!!!
I went to go into town yesterday evening, and headed out as usual but noticed as I went down the 1/4mile driveway that Rusty didn`t wanna come outta First gear...
I double checked shifter position several times and even added a few ounces of fluid after a mile down the road ~ trying to convince her to Shift...
So I hadto rely on BaLue to get me to town, I came home and fired her up, MAN that 360 Runs Great!!! Thank you Hillbilly!!!
So, whilst getting a tire installed on BaLue, I walked next door to Gear Master transmission to see what it`ll cost to rebuild Rustys` 1985 model AOD, Dale quoted me $700...
I`m hoping that whatever mysteriously made Rusty Like Low gear will mysteriously fix itself...
I`ll have a looky see this week...
Any Ideas or Tips from our Transmission GuRus on what to check/Do????
Dale says IF I have shavings in the pan I got a mess!!!

I don't think the old tranny is just going to start to shift again. If you can afford it have your tranny guy upgrade your internals to 4R70W parts and you will have a much better tranny.

Does your trans have a vacuum modulator? That's what I'd look for if my C4 stopped upshifting. Maybe just has a vac hose loose or leaking.

Yeah, this had happened before a time or three, right after installation, when the kick down linkage came off the throttle linkage... I checked that before I added the fluid as I was "roadside troubleshooting" the situation...
I don`t remember if there is a vacuum modulator hose attached to this one, I had thought of that too, but didn`t have time to investigate it, but I did look fer it...
At least I am on the "right track" with my diagnostic proceedures, so far...
I bought this tranny and had it installed fer $200 when I first got Rusty, I ain`t complaining on the troublefree use I`ve received outta it... I did have to follow up behind the installer on several things, kick down, mounting bolts, shift linkage, etc...
Today is another day and I hope to find time to take a look at Rusty after Tyler unloads the ton of sand into the sandbox from BaLues` bed... and the backlog of hunnydoos...
    First things first,
    Dennis

    Thanks guys

AOD has no kick down linkage or vacuum modulator.

Might be wrong, I have been before...

Yeah I crawled under there this morning, NO Vaccum hoses to the tranny...
I mightta called it by the wrong name by saying AOD, it`s an 1985 cougar transmission what has a fourth/overdrive gear...
No luck on it fixing itself whilst sitting, I took it down the driveway this morning and still Not Shifting...I was hoping a piece of trash lodged in a valve or something, Oh Well...
So I hooked up her up to the scrap wagon and pulled it closer to fill it, in hopes of getting enough money together to get up to Hillbillys` and pick up some goodstuff to replace Rustys` wore out drivetrain...
It`s time to revamp the old girl...
I`ll get started on teardown as soon as I can clear out under the engine pulling station and get on clean up under the hood and repair floors...
    1986 302 w/ AOD will be updated,

Yup. Got the problem solved. 90 Town Car 5.0 and AOD should cure Rusty's ailments. Ran it first of last month about an hour so's I know it's still good to go. Lady realestate broker yakking it up on the phone let the nose ease out into traffic and got the front bumper smeared over to one side bout' three feet. It was a pretty car but now the frame is killed bad enough that it's a donor. Only hit the smog pump luckily but Rusty won't need that.

    Woody is at Hillbillys` farm...
We`re looking at "Plan B" on this one...
The motor & tranny we`re talkin about now WAS going into that one, but "Plan B" came into play...
So, anybody need 72 Squire parts???

So now we are going to have a rusty beat up Ranchero with new floor boards disc brakes all the way around and a modern engine/trans. It is going to be a nice combo that going to mess with peoples minds.

For a rear end you might be able to find an 8.8 out of a 4 door sedan from the ford line. Not sure if any have disc breaks, but I know the 8.8 is almost as hard to kill as the 9 inch.

Explorer, grab an extra short axle from another, shorten the long side tube to even it out, install the other short and it should fit pretty decent in your car, disc brakes and all.

Yup, I like that idea...AND you caught on fairly quick...
To please the Show Judges??? Naah, just fer fun...
Y`all got me hooked the other day at the show, that was Rustys` first time ever registering, she`s been in the parking lot at some All Fords Shows I`ve attended with Hillbilly...
I`m looking fer a "bolt in" rearend with very little modify IF possible...
I can adapt to coilspings or what ever, but cutting axles ain`t a "mild modification" to me...
When I asked Hillbilly about it, he said he ain`t had nothing with that size of the 66 model rear...Don`t know what`ll fit...
But, as I rode into the yard tonite, it was heartbreaking to see Rusty sitting there undrivable, I gotta get her back up ASAP...
I`d love to have her ready fer the 7th annual Southeastern RancheroUSA Roundup/ 45th MoonShine Festival in Dawsonville...
It is do-able if everything falls into place, with 94 days and counting...
Even if I hafta use the rearend I`m using now...
Rayell, Where are you??? I need some of your knowledge/expertice...

I'm kinda going the same way with my car. Its not going to be a real show car. Just something I feel comfortable driving around in. Would love to get it ready for the Route 66 show here in Sept. but I doubt it'll be ready in time. Hope you get it running soon.

Yes thats an AOD but that is not a kick down cable its a throttle valve cable and the adjustment is critical to the life of the tranny..
