I remember auto shop. I would imagine half or less have a block that is still a decent core and the rest of the parts are scrap metal. I remember the 289 we had in auto shop. There were, at most a half dozen bolt holes in it that hadn't had at least one serious attempt to cross thread a bolt all the way into them. Some were even in the holes sheared off and had to be left out during assembly.
Still, if you wanted to build a slew of circle track engines and need cores to begin with, you likely could score most of them for a thousand or so. Unless some jackwagon decided to be a d!ck and run up the bidding, $60-100 each for usable cores is well within reasonable prices.
