Hello everyone, I changed my gear ratio to 3.73:1 and because of that I had to change the plastic gear on my speedometer cable where it attaches to the transmission so that my speedometer is accurate. Five years later I removed it because I'm doing a restoration and the gear is chewed up and missing teeth. What would cause that?
Don't know your car -- but my impression is that you have cable problems that cause extra drag as it attempts to turn the cable. Maybe something is kinked, or it is required to make a tight turn? If I had the problem I'd begin by replacing the cable. Maybe the cable has dried out? Axle ratio is not the problem. If that doesn't fix it, then disassemble the tail section and check the drive gear.
At the transmission, you should be able to spin the cable with your fingers. If it feels tight, pull the cable out of the sheath and apply grease to it. Make sure it engages the speedo when you put it back and see if that helps.
Be sure to grease the speedometer cable with a dry lube such as: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Ford...e&qid=1722351761&sprefix=,aps,140&sr=8-2&th=1
