The ladies need some way to warm up the basement for their craft work. This large basement with 9' ceilings typically runs about 55 F this time of year. I'm thinking one of those ventless propane heaters would be good. Can anyone recommend a brand, model, BTU's, that sort of thing? We have natural gas in the basement as well but I don't know if those heaters can be moved around as needed.
Read bad things about those things... https://www.buildinggreen.com/blog/avoid-unvented-gas-heaters Never actually owned one though, and dont think i would.
I worked in the propane industry my entire adult life. My opinion is the article posted by Jimbob is dead on. The water vapor is not insignificant especially if you live in a climate with any humidity. You also mentioned basement. The fuel gas code strictly disallows a propane appliance installation below grade. Propane (unlike natural gas) is heavier than air and raw gas from a leak can pool and not dissipate. For these reasons alone I would definitely not go with a vent free heater. FWIW.
How about an electric Ceramic Heater? I use one of these in my garage and it does amazingly well in keeping it comfortable in the coldest that it gets here... I typically turn it on about 15 - 20 minutes before I want to work on something and shut it off when I wrap up. I have it set up about 18 inches to 2 feet off the floor on a large speaker box and aimed such that it doesn't blow on or near anything flammable. The thermostat allows you to dial it down if it gets too warm. Much safer than a fuel fired heater, designed to be used inside a residence or office as a space heater... https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lasko-15...-Adjustable-Thermostat-754200-Silver/16503225 This link is to a wide selection of similar items... I also have an oscillating heater that I use occasionally in my office area when I feel the need and don't want to run the thermostat up controlling the main heat/A/C to the other rooms. I haven't noticed a real difference with typical use in my electric bill either. FWIW, YMMV. https://www.walmart.com/browse/home-improvement/ceramic-heaters/1072864_133032_1231142_6945126
What about a length of electric base board? and as others have said those little ceramic heaters work good. If you want great instant heat look in to a parabolic heater
65 reminded me that we have one of these parabolic thingies... https://www.harborfreight.com/400900-watt-oscillating-parabolic-heater-62313.html?_br_psugg_q=heater I usually take a long look at stuff that plugs in from HF, but this one works pretty good and has given good service.
