I have done quit a few on cars and pickups. I did the 71 Ranchero using the Ron Francis Express wiring kit. I really like it better then the other kits and they have lifetime support with each unit having its own serial number. Not only that but they are easy to install if you follow the directions. You can do a complete install in about 6 or 7 hours. Here is a picture of the kit I am installing in my 63 Galaxie. Ok the file is to large but it is a good kit. You can go to Ron Francis and order a new catalog. Greg
I did my 67 wiring with a Ron Francis kit as well. The directions are clear, the phone support is good, and I would recommend the kit. It went rather smoothly. The kit I used had 12 circuits. Nothing beats the peace of mind you get knowing your wiring isn't 50 years old.
I didn't like it on my first install so I called them up about getting the right crimp on the terminals. They said I was using the wrong crimper and I thought BS but when I looked at my cheap crimper I could see why I was not getting a good crimp. I broke down and ordered a ratcheting crimper with interchangeable heads for insulated and uninsulated heads . I think it costs me $40.00 plus freight. A world of difference. I could get a perfect crimp the first time and haven't had to redo any more wire's. Saved a ton of time and a lot of cussing on my part. Greg
I also purchased a quality ratcheting crimping tool for doing my wiring. Perfect crimp every time. Also, heat shrink and good wire wrap are your friends. One thing about Ron Francis wiring... the kits are set up for IDIDIT steering columns, so I had to translate the stock turn signal switch plug to the new wiring. A bit confusing but not overly so. Also, the kits are set up for aftermarket gauges, so I had to translate my stock dash to the wiring kit. That was a bit tricky.
I have not been able to find a wiring company yet that uses the Ford ignition connector except for Narraganset [sp] who build exact copy's of the original but are out of sight in price unless you are doing a numbers matching factory correct restore. We have to king of take what is offered, don't really like it but it is better then the way I used to do it buying spools of wire and connectors and making my own harness. Sometimes trying to figure out how to make something work is fun. Greg
I just did a 73 gt cluster with a universal Ford Painless wiring kit. It took a while, but seemed to be more complete than the Ron Francis. Ron Francis seemed to be made for pre 72 models even though it states up to 74 or 75. Printed circuit board and ignition were a pain to trace but other than that it went pretty smooth. I would suggest have ammeter converted to voltmeter if you haven't and having the tach updated to modern movement. It will make the wiring so much easier.
