I may be way off par here, but I believe the c6 is the stonger tranny.

Both transmissions are heavy-duty. However, you're more likely to find the FMX behind powerful small block engines like the 351. The C6 was exclusively used on big blocks. The C6 can probably handle more power and is much easier to find parts for. The FMX is based off the Cruise-O-Matic from the 50's and consumes a huge amount of power (then again so does the C6).

If you are going to build a tranny for ANY Small Block Ford with under 700 HP and about the same in TQ, use a C4. They use the absolute least amount power and they are proven from years of testing. There are major clutch upgrades and kits for them. They are definitely the everyday racers choice by far. Of course these are my opinions only. :D

Ranchero.us is right, if you have the money spring for a race built C4. C4's can handle anything we can throw at them. The C6 is much more durable in stock form then the C4 but wastes almost twice as much power. The FMX is a very reliable trans and can stand up to about 400 flywheel horsepower. Unfortunately its almost impossible to find performance parts for the FMX so all around the C4 is the best choice.

Now it's Dan the ranchero man's turn to shed some light on this tranny thing! If you are building a 302/351W/351C the C4 is your best choice, But if you are going with a 351M/400/429/460 I would without a shadow of a doubt go with the C6! The FMX is a good trans for a daily driver, But the C6 can take a beating and just keep on going! Both the C4 and the C6 have upgrade kits that can make them better performers. The FMX again is very limited.

Well it is time for me to voice my opinion! I have a 73 Ranchero very strong 351C with a FMX that runs strong and shifts very tight. I had a 64 F100 with a 390 C6 that I lost reverse in when backing up small steep hills with wood on the back. I had a 48 dodge 1 1/2 ton that I put a 69 302 2V C4 in and I could put 2 cords of wet, green black oak split firewood on and it would carry it down and up steep mountain roads. It finally gave out after about 6 months of beatings!

I have had good luck with all three. There is certainly nothing wrong with an FMX, they are good, durable transmissions. Also....just thought I'd mention that C6's were NOT used exclusively behind big blocks. Small block C6's do exist. They are rare as hen's teeth, though! I have one sitting in the corner of my shop that I pulled out of a '72 Mach I with a 351 Cleveland. The Cleveland had 4-bolt mains also.
