When I first got my Ranchero I knew I wanted a good stereo and I didn't want to mess with the stock AM radio so I decided to do a box build and here's how I did it.
First I took a cardbord box that was about the right size and cut it to fit the car, and the stereo.http://https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/713903/fullsize/ranchero-001.jpghttp://https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/713906/fullsize/ranchero-002.jpg
Then I traced it out on some 3/4in plywood, cut it out, screwed it together, painted it and installed the head unit and speakers.

The ford embolem came off a 92 ford ranch pickup with 176.000 miles on it. I plan on putting some gray trim around the corners and maybe putting some lights in it. Tell me what you think about it, and if you have any ideas.

Cool -- I'm eventually going to do something like that, only will probably use oak shelving planks from Lowes or similar.
What are those seats? And how much trouble to install them? And can you get the spare in/out OK?

I don't know what the seats are, they were in the car when I got it but I love them. I would say you could get the spare in/out just fine. They don't look like they would be to hard to install.

LOL -- you'd think that would be a given, but my '71 has some other Ford seats in it, perhaps from a Torino 2-door car [???] -- they have sliding headrests and fold-down center arm-rest pieces and ashtrays on the backs -- and there's no way the spare would ever come out without first removing the passenger seat. So for now I carry it in the back with a chain and lock so it doesn't roll away. The spare itself might be an original from when the car was new; at least it's small enough to fit into the cubby.

or maybe speaker carpet? What do you think about that?

I like the barnwood look. It's subtle, with just a touch of redneck.

Donny, I built a console (made out of MDF) for my stereo. I put black window screening on the sides to help with air flow for the stereo.
I made some speaker boxes and coated them with spray on bedliner. Why bedliner? I have no idea. :D
I'll get some pics when the sun comes up.
Ya did good. Have you got it attached to the floor?

That's what yours needs, Donny, cupholders. Why did it take OE's so long to figure out we needed cupholders? Now there are too many in cars.

I like the idea of your box, and not cutting into the dash. I'm at a point where I would really like to get some kind of sound into the car. As the stock radio only works for about 7 seconds then dies out.
So my question, is, how does it sound with speakers facing away from each other vs if you had the speakers in the doors facing each other.
Don't know if you did this or not, but I would probably use a plug connection, so it can be removed if needed without any hassles.

Ahh, from a hi-fi viewpoint, it's screwed. But how much choice is there really in a small pickup cab?
I think I'm eventually going to go with small drivers [mid, high] built into custom headrest units. Woofer(s) can be put anywhere there's room for them.

The speakers sound (I think anyway) just like they would if they were in the door.
For a plug I tapped into the stock radio wire and put a cigaret lighter plug(under the dash) in it and I tapped into the stock cigaret lighter for the memory wire(it also has a plug in it).
Also I put a 12" sub next to the spare tire, it makes all the difference in the world!
I can have the Radio out of it in about a minute.

Donny, have you got a pic of that one? I really don't see doors or kick panels as a good place for a woofer.
