I know I have an exhaust leak coming from the mid section of the car, problem is, I don't know how to find it. When I first turn on my project car, it runs rough and light black smoke come out the tail pipe and underneath the midsection of the car. However, when the engine is warmed up, there is absolutely no smoke but I can smell exhaust when I stand next to the car. I was wondering if anybody has ever tried to spot the exhaust leak. And if so, what was your process of doing such a thing? I have to smog the car and I want a temporary fix for about a week or 2 until I have enough money to replace my entire exhaust pipe. I really need to pass smog.

I realize that this is not ranchero pertinent, however, this is by far the best, most experienced, and most knowledgeable forum I've ever been to.

You can get a temporary bandaid fix at most parts houses. Hold your hand near the length of the pipe with the engine running. You will feel the leak easily enough.

you can take alittle oil an pour it in the carb, you will then get blue smoke from any holes, or do as Petey sayes, but get someone to hold their hand on the end of the pipe, then all of it goes out of the hole. Good luck.
