I have secured a new old stock headlight switch for my 67 Ranchero, now I need to install it. Would someone tell me what I'm up against getting the old on out and the new one in. Thanks, Bill
Really just a bit of a crick in your neck. Pull the negative battery cable first to prevent any unwanted welding. A mirror and bright light is helpfull to see the switch and how it's oriented. Usually you will find the knob and shaft release button pointed downward toward the floor. Pull the knob out to the headlights on position then press the release button while pulling the knob toward you. After the knob and shaft are out you will see the retainer that turns counter clockwise to remove. Unscrew that while holding the switch in place. Once the retainer is out you can fish the switch down behind the dash enough to see how to unplug the wire connector. Plug the wires on first then go back up to where the switch is aligned with the mounting hole. You'll have to hold the switch in place while reinstalling the retainer. See that alignment tab on the switch ? It has to be in the notch in the switch hole in the dash. Sometimes it takes some finnagling to get the shaft and knob to lock in place in the new switches. Just keep wiggling the shaft while you poke it in the hole, it will eventually find the sweet spot and lock in place. Nota bad job, just in an inconvenient place to get both hands positioned correctly.
