I had never heard of a 400 cleveland before I had my engine identified. Is this rare? Are there any particular collectors out there?

My 72 runs great and is a daily driver when it isn't summer (no A/C) here in Florida. I've recently had the car repainted and the transmission was rebuilt about 5 years ago along with the regular gamut of electrical and general work.

How'd you come to conclude that you have a 400 Cleveland?

I have no A/C to use in my Ranchero.
I actually dropped off the Ranchero to get some electrical work done. They asked what kind of engine I had and I told them I had not personally identified it but was told it was a 350C when I bought it and would happily pay for them to identify it. I got a call a few hours later and was told it was a 400C. I will get the block number in the next day or two. Where is it located? I would like to take a picture.

Hi Merlock18 ... the block number is located behind the starter on the side of the block. You have to remove the starter to see it.

There was no '400c' motor. But for info, the two motors look very similar [400, 351c], valve covers are the same. There are doubtless pics on this site to help ID which you have; try the Search.

Hey, Giska, welcome back! Do you have any pics of your engine or perhaps the emissions decal for the engine?

Well I can take some pic's of it and the emmision decal if it's still on there ? But we have an big rainstorm here at the moment so I will get it as soon as its over.
What is the VIN # on the car that has the 400, it will tell if it's the original engine ?

The VIN code for all 400 CID engines is "S," but the 351 engines up through '74 is either a Cleveland or Windsor, with the same VIN code ("H"). The 351M did not debut until the '75 MY, when it replaced the 351C, which was not given the IMCO (Improved Combustion) upgrades. If your 400 is the original factory engine, I would think it would have the dual-bellhousing bolt pattern on the block.

The 351 for '73 could be a H, Q or R. For example, mine is a Q. Unless I misunderstood your point, in which case sorry about that.
