Sometimes simple things go sideways and just plain never give up insulting our intelligence. Had a stuck distributor in a big FE truck engine years ago that never gave up. I needed the top end for another engine build but had to source another intake because I couldn't get the distributor out. Almost reverted to melting it out with a torch but came back to sanity just in time. That sucker is still right there twenty years later.
Hi Dan, you might be able to use one of these. It's a Distributor puller which attaches to a snap-on tools axle puller. The shaft of the puller screws into dizzy puller and you slide it under the bowl of the Distributor and kind of gently use the slide hammer on the axle puller to hopefully loosen the dizzy without damage to it. i have had this tool for many years and haven't broken a Dizzy yet, knock on wood. I don't know if it is still available from snap-on. The Wrench
The shop I worked for at the turn of the Millennium had one, and his rule was that that was only to be used when you intended to break the dizzy. If it came out intact, great, but if not, you were planning for it, NBD.
I want to take a moment and thank everyone for all their help and suggestions. This has bee a beast of a issue. at the moment I will just keep soaking the thing in penetranting oil and hope it will loosen up. if not in springtime I will work on it again and see what can be done. Take care, Peace, Dan
I just saw this on a Ford thread on FB: It fits on top of the rotor shaft; when you turn it in the correct direction, the meshed gears push the distributor body upward, busting it loose enough enough for removal.
No not right now. Car has been running pretty good and with the holidays just have not had much time. Still been soaking penetrating oil. Will try again in a couple of weeks.
Yeah, it was rusted in. I hate that. I'm sorry you had to damage it getting it out. Do you have a replacement?
The entire engine and trans is coming out for a refresh. I have been collecting parts for a couple of weeks. A dizzy is on the list!
That rust was from all the short distance driving that car did. When I took it on the high way that was the first time that car saw speeds over 60 MPH. Lady that had it used to for church, store home once a week and the entire trip was less than a half a mile.
Glad to see it didn't whoop ya Dan. Now take it out back and use the 12lb sledge on it, it'll make you feel better . FWIW, I just purchased this for Jarrett's 472/ZF 5 speed install. $34.95 cheap enough and will allow the use of the Duraspark cap and adapter, also uses single port vacuum advance. https://www.ebay.com/itm/184152021899?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 Sorry for such a large image. Good luck with your re-fresh Dan
When I get a chance I am going to open up the one I purchased and find out what advance rate/limiter it has and probably recurve it while it's opened up. Not sure if you have this link Dan, but very helpful in recurving a Duraspark distributor. http://www.reincarnation-automotive.com/Duraspark_distributor_recurve_instructions_index.html
