"The issue is the resolution that Supermotors hosts the image - it resizes them on upload. Had the limitation of Supermotors images been known to me when I registered for a site to host the images I would probably have gone elsewhere." >72gtva, on a different thread

    +++++++++++++++

It's sad we can't have better pics and drawings here, and beyond sad to blame it on SuperMotors. One way to mitigate the problem would be to take a look at revising the allowed file sizes and dimensions for pics uploaded directly to the site -- limits look pretty arbitrary to me [if not nonsensical].

BB, I have my own site and do pics from there and I could post some really big pics. But all folks do not have broadband so download times are a concern, so I limit my size to 400 by 300 or so BUT the resolution is still there to a point. I use PS CS2 and save pics for the web which deletes alot of color not used on the web which reduces the file size. You do have a point, Dans pics are not of a resolution you can see with clarity at times, but hey he is a wealth of info and maybe his technique for pics aren't perfect but I for one think that any info from that Gentleman is a treasure for this site...

BTW...:)... BB... I received a booking photo of you from someone on another forum who had this pic just before your 3 year haircut...Tell me it's not you:eek:

and even more sad to complain about some one who takes the time to try to help EVERYONE on the site by scanning and posting info from the factory books that he has. Books by the way that cost an arm and a leg to buy when you can find them.... Very sad infact!...I cant believe the things people complain about on a FREE web site...and then insult the guy who trys to help the most.

DAN I FOR ONE AM GREATFULL FOR THE INFO AND SCANS YOU POST! THANK YOU FOR YOU EXTRA EFFORT.

Damn, try to get a grip. I thanked him twice in that thread about the driveshafts. Maybe you could let 72 complain if he really feels insulted.

Do you see the name of this section of the board? What does "Site Feedback" mean to you, if not suggestions about the board?

I do think it's lame to blame this site's limitation on SuperMotors. And I did show in that zoomed pic what's wrong with doing it that way. If you can read all those numbers you're a better man than me.

Dan, I apologize if you felt insulted by my post at the head of this thread -- my intention was to make the site more useful. I can't believe there's really any hard limit on the size of pics uploaded directly to the board.

You can always just link to the Supermotors URL here which allows you to jump through to SM, and click the pic to see the original size, like:

Just drop the thumbnail image here, highlight it, and put the URL over the top of it. Failing that, you can always just yell at the helpful people and snap at the guy who pointed out the yelling, either way really.

???????? Please tell me how to get the full size pics from SuperMotors, if it they exist in that form. 72 said in the driveshaft thread that they were resized smaller by Supermotors, I thought he was telling me that they were not available there in larger format. Unless he was just blowing me off with that.

If I follow the link seen in the properties of the pic 72gtva posted here, the result is the same tiny pic. How do I get the larger version that 72 alluded to? Not trying to be a jerk here, I'd really like to see that info in a usable format. It's truly disappointing that is seen as an attack on the board, or on a member.

What THIS thread is about is a proposed change to the board software setup, for those not able to understand what "Site Feedback" means.

Do you know enough about the board software to understand those upload size limits seen on the Advanced page? That seems completely arbitrary to me, if not clueless; a .bmp of 19.5kb size would be smaller than one of those thumbnails.

If you click the thumbnail I provided, it should have spawned a launch in a seperate window (probably) with the picture in Supermotors. Click the picture and it will expand to it's original upload size.

As for size limits here, I can post a honkin' pic with no trouble... Here's a muddy mutt and a cute kid.

??? All I know is what 72gtva wrote in the driveshaft thread. Are you saying he was lying to me about that? A board administrator? I don't want to believe that.

Check the first post in this thread, in which I quoted him directly. Maybe you could explain it to him, how to avoid that resizing that happens when he uploads to SuperMotors. Not the first time this has happened to his pics.

These are the facts regarding the item you selected for demonstration in post #20 of the C4 thread.

File size of image as extracted from document: 422 kbytes (after cropping image as scanned)

File size of image saved using jpg compression technique: 80 kbytes (still plently big, fills a full screen view when selected, quality largely indistinguishable from scanned image)

File size of image after upload to Supermotors site: 40.19 Kbytes (reduced size, some reduction in quality).

Don't know why Supermotors resizes them, couldn't find a setting that permits adjusting the size or keeping the site from doing it. They note size limits are 80 MB but every file I have uploaded to them has been resized.

Okey-doke. Maybe Foristell can tell you how to avoid that, he obviously doesn't experience that resizing issue. Nor do lots of other users, as I'm sure you can see for yourself.

But what =this= thread is about is a request for a change in the maximum upload file size -- any comments on that question? It's a common complaint here that the current board settings won't allow pics to be uploaded because of size limitations.

Maybe docs that ought to be in stickies could be given a special exemption. My goal is not to make trouble here. It just happened again that I can't read something I needed to know because the pics are too fuzzy.

Is there some reason you couldn't post the 80kb pic directly to the board? The limit on a .jpg is 97.5kb -- that would avoid the Supermotors resizing.

BB, I think that was discussed when Billy changed formats/servers/platform, it costs' Ranchero $$$ for storage/disk space, I know, I ran out of space once on my server with all the pics I upload...Have you tried a different browser, you use Linux right?

Folks, there is no problem with bb's browser. I have linux and win2k and even a new windows 7 machine here -- and a fine lcd monitor. Those little pics look the same on all of them.

May I ask why this request is an issue for either you or CJ? Why are you in this? How does this injure you?

CJ, if you'll look under that "Go Advanced" button, you can see the allowable files sizes for uploads directly to the site; it's 97.5kb for .jpg files, so Dan's 80kb .jpg would not strain anything on the server.

Two issues in play here. First is the size limit of attachments posted directly to the site. The obvious reason for not allowing large files to be hosted here is $$. Real estate for the likes of that is prohibitive for a non-sponsored little forum like this. It makes total sense to use images hosted elsewhere and link to them using the image and url tags.

Second is the size of the image posted from Supermotors. My suspicion is that no one at SM has their picture sizes throttled. It's in the way that the photo is referenced. If you just grab the image tag and plop it here, you will get a smaller version of the original picture. You need to either reference the original, or link the photo to jump to SM so you can click through to the big version.

Check post 19 in the C4 thread BB. Supermotors does reduce the size in the page that I used to reference the picture, FF pointed how to me how I can have it reference the original larger size and those are up there now.

As for our site - the issue is bandwidth and webhost server limits.
