How much would it cost to re-chrome a nice one? $45-50?

I asked my Dad if he wanted a nicer one (yours). He said he's going to send in the cab corners and hockey stick trim parts for rechroming, along with the tailgate handle. All parts redone, $200.

As Carl noted ^^^ that is a good price! Where is your dad getting that done? The only chrome place hereabouts shut down due to EPA overreach and finding folks that do good work is getting tough...

The Detroit are is still pretty industrious, with plenty of places around that do oddball things. OE's still need to build stuff.

A friend of mine owns a machine shop and does some prototype work for GM, Ford, Chrysler (and now Toyota with my assistance). He has stuff plated at Selfridge Plating. He called them and got a price for Dad. Not even sure if they do stuff for the public, but you could call them.

If I ever get back to that point I might have to see if I can arrange something like that... right now the goal is to try and find the bottom of the garage and see if I can even locate the parts to put the car back together.
